OJ PITCHER
Rating: 1/10
Stats: 0 runs, 0 wickets
Comment: Preferred at the top of the order once again but was undone by a decent enough Zaheer Khan delivery which jagged back at him off the seam. The big gap between pat and pad contributed to him playing the ball onto his stumps in the first over. Ran around in the field, but didn’t do anything outstanding it has to be said.
STEPHEN OUTERBRIDGE
Rating: 3/10
Stats: 9 runs, 0 catches
Comment: Looks a decent player, but somehow never seems to score runs consistently at an international level. His technique is pretty respectable and given time and a little patience there’s no reason why he couldn’t develop into a good opener. Beaten for pace and movement by Khan when he was bowled early on, having just slapped the same bowler through mid-on one ball earlier.
DELYONE BORDEN
Rating 5/10
Stats: 13 runs, 0 catches
Comment: Was hugely unlucky to be given out lbw off Munaf Patel having battled away bravely for around 40 minutes. Replays showed the ball was heading well over the top of the stumps and to use some cricketing slang, he was well and truly “sawn off” on that occasion by the umpire. Bowling wise he put in five overs for 30 (including the wicket of Ganguly who he defeated in the flight to have the charging left-hander stumped) which was very respectable in the circumstances. So, one wonders, why on earth he wasn’t allowed to bowl his ten straight through rather than persisting with medium pacers who were like lambs to the slaughter?
DAVID HEMP
Rating: 8/10
Stats: 76 not out, 0 catches, 0 wickets
Comment: After a poor run of form with the bat in the limited-overs game, Hemp finally game good in perhaps the biggest game of the lot. Rode his luck at times, but played some delicious cover drives and succeeded in keeping his head while things fell apart around him. A very, very good knock. Was heavily punished when he bowled his little medium pacers, but as a part-timer bowling to the very best, that was to be expected.
IRVING ROMAINE
Rating: 2/10
Stats: 0 runs, 0 catches
Comment: The skipper had a dreadful day, both with his batting and with his captaincy. His field placings were OK for the most part, but the total lack of any plan when the Indian innings was reaching its barnstorming conclusion was frustrating to watch. His bowling changes were all over the place — something highlighted by the fact that David Hemp was called on to bowl the last over of the innings. His batting didn’t fare much better either and he was dismissed for a duck for the second match in a row to cap a miserable week for him.
JANEIRO TUCKER
Rating: 2/10
Stats: 0 runs, 0 wickets, 1 catch
Comment: Played an absolute pig of shot when he waltzed across his stumps and tried to smack Kumble over mid-wicket — only to be bowled all over the place for a duck. What on earth he was doing with that shot only he would know. Unlike the Sri Lankans, the Indian batsmen showed Tucker’s medium pace little respect this time and he was hammered out of the attack — his nine overs going at over seven. Took a spectacular diving catch in the deep to get rid of MS Dhoni, but apart from that there was very little to get excited about.
DEAN MINORS,/B>
Rating: 6/10
Stats: 21 runs, 1 stumping
Comment: Had a good day in general behind the stumps, and should have had Yuvraj Singh stumped early in his innings but for a ridiculously poor third umpire decision. Came to the crease with Bermuda in trouble and kept Hemp company for a while with an excellent little knock of 21. He would have been upset at his mode of dismissal having done all the hard work, however, when he chipped a catch tamely to mid-off.
LIONEL CANN,/B>
Rating: 2/10
Stats: 0 runs, 0 wickts, 0 catches
Comment: Playing against the team he supports, Bermuda’s master-blaster had a woeful day. His little seamers were smashed all over the place (why is this man bowling for the national team??) while off his second ball he mis-timed a pull shot and was caught low-down on the off side for a duck. There was some considerable doubt over whether the ball carried to the fielder, but the umpires conferred and sent Cann on his way.
KEVIN HURDLE
Rating: 5/10
Stats: 1 wickets, 0 catches
Comment: Was by far the most economical of Bermuda’s bowlers having spent a lot of time in the break between games working on sorting out his jittery run-up. Having taken a lot of stick for his performances in recent times, the man deserves a lot of credit for the way he responded yesterday. He bowled straight, swung the ball at times and hit a decent length more often than not. If his run up is fluid, he can bowl well. If not, that’s when the no-balls and the expensive figures come his way.
DWAYNE LEVEROCK
Rating: 4/10
Stats: 0 wickets, 9 runs, 1 catch
Comment: Got absolutely pulverised by India’s batsmen, going for 96 off his ten overs. Yuvraj Sung took a particular liking to him and deposited him frequently into the stands over mid-wicket with some brutal hitting. Took a stunning one-handed catch at slip for the first wicket to fall, with the celebrations proving memorable. With the bat he did an excellent job hanging around for Hemp, and though he lacks many attacking shots, has a decent enough defence to stone-wall even the best attacks.
MALACHI JONES
Rating: 5/10
Stats: 1 wicket, 1 run, 2 catches
Comment: Enjoyed a superlative start to his World Cup career when he had Robin Uthappa caught at slip off his very first ball — a wicket which brought tears of joy to the eyes of both him and his parents in the stands. The emotion of the occasion clearly got to the fourth-youngest player in World Cup history after that though, and he was savaged by Sehwag after dropping short and wide far too frequently. Bowled at a lively pace (79 mph at his best), however, and also took two good catches in the deep and there’s absolutely no doubt that Bermuda have unearthed a real gem in this kid.
