World Cup: How they did
Adrian Robson takes a look back at players' individual performances at the World Cup:
CLAY SMITH
Matches played: 1
Total runs scored 0
Highest scor 0
Catches 0
Wickets taken: Did not bowl
Comment: A hugely disappointing World Cup for a veteran player once considered Bermuda’s premier batsman and an influential force throughout the build-up to the tournament despite a succession of injuries. Received a dubious lbw decision in the opening match against Sri Lanka from a Chamanda Vaas delivery that TV replays suggested would have missed leg stump. With another zero next to his name following previous failures with the bat, Smith was dropped for the game against India and failed to recapture his place for the final game against Bangladesh
STEPHEN OUTERBRIDGE
Matches played:2
Total runs scored:9
Highest score: 9
Catches0
Wickets taken: Did not bowl
Comment: One of several promising youngsters in the squad who hopefully will have benefited from the entire World Cup experience. Looked impressive early in his innings against India, compiling a score of nine before being completely undone by a Zaheer Khan ball which rattled his stumps. But like so many others in the team, against Bangladesh he was guilty of poor shot selection, hooking a delivery from Mortaza straight into the hands of Rafique when there was no need for such an extravagant shot so early in the innings.
DEAN MINORS
Matches played: 3
Total runs scored 48
Highest score: 23
Matches: 1
Stumpings:1
Wickets taken: Did not bowl
Comment: Should Minors announce his retirement from international cricket this week, as is expected, his absence will be a huge blow to the squad. Both in the lead-up to the World Cup and during the tournament itself, he proved a consistent performer behind the stumps and with the bat. Whether opening the innings or featuring lower down the order, he normally managed to score runs or play a solid anchor role.
OJ PITCHER
Matches played: 3
Tota runs scored: 28
Highest score: 22
Catches: 1
Wickets taken: Did not bowl
Comment: Another young member of the squad who will play an integral role in the Island team’s bid to qualify for the next World Cup in 2011. Although considered an all-rounder, he wasn’t called upon to bowl during this tournament but was asked to open the innings on all three occasions. Whether that’s his rightful position in the order remains open to debate, although he looked sound against Bangladesh with a patient knock of 22, his best of the tournament.
DELYONE BORDEN
Matches played: 3
Total runs scored: 2
Highest score:/B> 13
Catches:/B> 0
Wickets taken: 2
Runs conceded 72 off 10 overs
Comment: Another young all-rounder who hasn’t quite lived up to his full potential yet but should remain a key member of the squad in years to come. Received little assistance from the wickets in the Caribbean and often found himself bowling at the ‘death’ when containing the batsmen was always difficult. But he does have an uncanny knack of picking up crucial wickets. As a batsman he has the ability to be far more productive than he was during this tournament.
IRVING ROMAINE
Matches played: 3
Toal runs scored: 11
Highest Score: 11
Catches: 0
Wickets taken: 0
Runs conceded: 29 off 3 overs
Comment: Perhaps the burden of captaincy, which during the World Cup entailed a number of off-field distractions, proved too heavy as there was little evidence of the free-scoring heavy hitter Bermuda have relied upon so often in the past. Suffered ducks in his first two innings before making a quickfire 11 against Bangladesh, and on all three occasions was trapped lbw which suggests he needs to improve his footwork. But as usual, nothing could wipe the smile from Romaine’s face and as such he remained a firm favourite with both the local and international media.
DAVID HEMP
Matches played 3
Total runs scored: 90
Highest score: 76 not out
Catches: 1
Wickets taken: 0
Runs conceded: 32 off 2 overs
Comment: His beautifully crafted, unbeaten knock of 76 against India, as those around him perished, was one of the highlights of the entire campaign. But the Glamorgan skipper will have been disappointed he couldn’t carry on in the same vein against Bangladesh when he was dismissed for a duck. Has vowed to stick with Bermuda over the next few years and will be welcomed with open arms.
JANEIRO TUCKER
Matches played: 3
Total runs scored: 13
Highest score: 9
Catches: 4
Wickets taken: >0
Runs conceded: 136 off 22 overs
Comment: In the field, Tucker was simply superb, holding four terrific catches, and he also produced a couple of tidy bowling spells. But like his skipper, he never really fired with the bat, often finding himself under pressure after the early order had failed.
SALEEM MUKUDDEM
Matches played:2
Total runs scored:
Highest score: 0
Catches: 0
Wickets taken: 5
Runs conceded: 69 off 15 overs
Comment: Announced his retirement immediately after the tournament and like Minors will be sorely missed. By far Bermuda’s most consistent bowler from the time the team qualified right through the tournament itself. Fittingly, he finished on a high, producing an immaculate spell of swing bowling in the final match against Bangladesh to return excellent figures of three for 19 off just three overs. Blotted his copybook by being handed a one-game suspension for failing to attend a team function, but is expected to offer his side of the story on that issue in the days to come.
LIONEL CANN
Matches played: 3
Total runs scored: 44
Highest score:28
Catches:0
Wickets taken:1
Runs conceded: 88 off 12 overs
Comment: Smashed an impressive top score of 28 against Sri Lanka and belted 14 in just four balls against Bangladesh but continues to frustrate his team-mates and coaches by chasing almost every delivery. With a little more patience, he might have been far more productive, but remains a player who can quickly turn any game upside down.
MALACHI JONES
Matches played: 1
Total runs scored: 1
Highest score: 1
Catches:2
Wickets taken: 1
Runs conceded: 74 off 7 overs
Comment: Who can forget the teenager’s remarkable introduction to the World Cup, snaring a wicket with his very first delivery? In the same match, against India, he also held two catches. As former England coach David Lloyd commented, the Berkeley student has the potential to become a “top class” quickie, and could become the player around whom Bermuda will shape their national team in the future.
DWAYNE LEVEROCK
Matches played: 3
Total runs scored 10
Highest score: 9
Catches: 1
Wickets taken: 2
Runs conceded: 182 off 23.3 overs
Comment: Hit world headlines with his terrific performance in a warm-up match against England in St. Vincent where he snatched the key wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood. But struggled to reproduce that form in the actual World Cup where the pitches offered his left arm spin little assistance.
KEVIN HURDLE
Matches played: 3
Total runs scored: 6
Highest score: 6
Catches: 2
Wickets taken: 3
Runs conceded: 139 off 23 overs
Comment: Bowled as well and as quick in the World Cup as at any time during the last year, sending down deliveries of around 85 mph. But continues to swell the extras column with too many no balls and wides. Performed superbly in the field, taking a magnificent, running catch to dismiss Bangladesh opener Tamim.
STEFAN KELLY
Matches played: 0
Comment: Will have been disappointed not to have played some part in the tournament, particularly in the final match against Bangladesh where the overcast conditions might have proved to his liking. But, still in his teens, the young pacer appears to have bright future.
KWAME TUCKER
Matches played: 0
Comment: Was taken to the World Cup as a back-up wicketkeeper to Minors and, like Kelly, will have been upset at not being given a chance to perform in the final match by which time Bermuda had already been virtually eliminated.
