Top bat Blakeney linked with Cleveland
Top cricketer Glenn Blakeney has been linked with a move from Bailey’s Bay to Cleveland County for the upcoming season. But no deal has been agreed upon and even County skipper Dennis Musson wasn’t sure yesterday whether the former international and Cup Match star would switch clubs. But Musson agreed Blakeney would be “a great addition” to a squad which is young in age.Regarded as one of Bermuda’s best opening batsmen in the last ten years, Blakeney has been in and out of the sport with injury problems over the past two seasons and has played in only a handful of games in that span.Blakeney couldn’t be reached for comment yesterday but Musson said: “I heard a rumour of him joining us and if he did it would be a great signing. Obviously he is an experienced player who has seen it and done it all and we would love it if he joined the club.“With his vast experience in the game he would be able to help guide our youngsters along and show them the right way in how to approach the game and so forth.“He would add stability to our front line so this would be a great addition for us.”Blakeney thumped a fierce 89 against Warwick in a Twenty20 match last season and followed up that performance with 59-ball 103 that included six sixes and ten fours in a Twenty20 match against a Commercial XI in last year’s Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) sanctioned competition. The explosive batsman, however, has yet to be seen at training with the squad currently being put through their paces by the coaching staff. “He is the type of person that can win you a game by himself,” added Musson, “and with his quality he is someone that can take the pressure off some of the younger guys in the squad.“We have a very young team and are in the middle of rebuilding but we are looking for promotion this year and it will be tough because other sides have got some good acquisitions, but we are looking to go up.”
