BCB launch Elite Player League

Bermuda’s best cricketers will battle against each other on a regular basis this season in a newly-created Elite Player League.Four teams will compete several times over a six week period in May and June, with the best of the best selected for an All-Star match at the National Sports Centre on Friday, July 1.The Bermuda Cricket Board have invited some 70 players to be involved in the league, which will form a major part of the national squad’s preparations for the Twenty20 World Cup Regional Qualifiers in July. With the ICC confirming that only the 10 Test playing nations will compete in the 50- over World Cup, the shorter version is likely to become the main focus for the Associate nations. As with other countries there are players who excel at the Twenty20 game, and head coach David Moore hopes they will take the opportunity to make a bid to be a part of the national set-up. “It’s a good opportunity for me to see the best play each other, and hopefully someone will take that chance to put their hands up and become involved in the national squad,” he said.“The players that are in Dubai now, aren’t necessarily the ones that will go to the tournament in July. This will be a good opportunity for players to bid for a spot, as long as they are willing to buy into the culture we have created around the national team.”Beginning on Saturday, May 7, the EPL will run as an extra tier to the domestic structure, but won’t clash with any other matches. The ultimate aim of the league is to expose the best players on the Island to a higher level of cricket and help bridge the gulf between the Premier Division and the game on the international stage.“It was clearly evident that in the 2010 “All-Star” tournament that the quality of cricket was higher than is seen in both domestic leagues,” said Moore.“The competition between bat and ball, the focus of the players and the larger ground with better quality outfield all led to a far greater standard of game.“This consistently higher quality game will assist in the development of higher quality cricketers with greater game sense that will be more effectively transferred to International cricket.”The majority of matches will take place at the National Sports Centre, and the Sea Breeze Oval, with the All-Star match being played at the NSC under lights.Elite Player League ScheduleSat 7 May - 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pmSun 8 May 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pmSat 21 May 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pmSat 28 May 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pmSat 11 June 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pmSat 25 June 5pm-9pmSun 26 June 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pmFriday 1 July 5pm-9pmInvited players*Bailey’s Bay: Terryn Fray, Tre Govia, Kyle Hodsoll, Dennico Hollis, David Lovell, Irving Romaine, Burton Outerbridge, Stephen Outerbridge, Lateef Trott, Jim West.Cleveland CCC: Damali Bell, Allan Douglas Jr, Mackih McGowan, Dennis Musson Jr, William White, Makai YoungDevonshire Recreation Club: Derek Brangman, Stephen Bremar Jr, Chris Foggo.Flatts VRC: David Beddard, Regino Smith.PHC: Jason Anderson, Fiqre Crockwell, Kamau Leverock, Dean Stephens, Kevin Tucker.Southampton Rangers: Jaloni Auboy, Staphen Dill, Dwayne Leverock, Shannon Rayner, Dion Stovell, Janeiro Tucker.St David’s: Delyone Borden, Lionel Cann, Stefan Kelly, Loren Marshall, Justin Pitcher, OJ Pitcher, Shea Pitcher, Samuel Robinson.St George’s: Oronde Bascombe, Christian Burgess, Mishael Paynter, Rudell Pitcher, Detroy Smith, Ryan Steede.Somerset CC: Joshua Commissiong, Jordan DeSilva, Kamel Easton, Joshua Gilbert, Ricky Hoyte, Kwasi James, Marcus Johnson, Reid Jones, Shaquille Jones, Greg Maybury, Azeem PitcherWestern Star: Khiry Furbert, Brian Hall, Kevin Hurdle, McLaren Lowe, Tre Manders, Justin Robinson.Willow Cuts: Deunte Darrell, Chris Douglas, Kevon Fubler, Malachi Jones, Chris Kawaley, Ramar Simmons.Social Club: Rodney Trott*Please note that players are listed by their club as of 31 March, 2011
