Bermuda fight for survival
Bermuda’s task against UAE today is a simple one, they must win, and even then it might not be enough to save them from relegation.Second from bottom in the World Cricket League Division Two standings going into the final round of matches, the Island are level on two points with two other teams, Hong Kong and Uganda, who play Namibia and Papua New Guinea respectively.Relegation would be a disaster for Bermuda, as it would be for any of the other teams. Division Three means a loss of High Performance status, a loss of ICC funding and no chance of getting it back for nearly two years.Defeat and Bermuda will be relying on others to save them, and if that doesn’t happen the future looks bleak. Head coach David Moore might find himself with a Bermuda Cricket Board who can no longer afford him, and the same could probably be said for chief executive Neil Speight. The game on the Island could find itself set back 10 years in terms of its overall development, especially in an environment where Government support has dried up, and there would be no money coming in from outside. It is hardly surprising that Moore called today’s game a ‘do or die’ affair.“If we win we have a very good chance of remaining in the division even if other teams win as well,” said Moore. “This last game will determine who gets the fourth spot, as us, Hong Kong and Uganda have all won one game thus far.“It is do or die as far as we’re concerned. Ours is a very good run rate so we’re in a good position.”Unfortunately for Bermuda their run rate isn’t as good as Hong Kong’s, who sit sit one spot above them. They have a net run rate of -0.525, as opposed to Bermuda’s -0.67.Uganda, meanwhile, are well adrift at the bottom of the standings with a net run rate of -1.516, mainly due to the 205-run hammering they took from Namibia. The table is incredibly congested, however, and even Papua New Guinea with four points and currently third, a spot Bermuda could yet occupy, aren’t safe, at least not mathematically.A net run rate of -0.932 means that if PNG were to lose to Uganda today, and Hong Kong and Bermuda both win, then they and Uganda could be relegated. The likelihood of Hong Kong beating Namibia, however, is very small, and if Hong Kong take a serious beating, and Bermuda only lose narrowly, then Moore’s side could still survive, having won only once.Hong Kong, though, have been in this position before. They lost their first two games of the Division Three tournament in January and eventually won the competition.“It is very close, and the World Cricket League is always very close when you only play everyone once in five qualifying games,” said coach Charlie Burke.“Net run rate becomes very important, you can’t just throw your innings away and be bowled out for 110 or anything like that, you need to just dig your heels in and fight, and fight and see what happens.“We learnt that in Division Three, you’ve just got to keep giving yourself the chance because you never know when the difference between fourth and fifth could be net run rate.”Bermuda could still finish third if they beat UAE, and PNG and Hong Kong both lose. And even if they finish today in fourth spot, Bermuda would get another crack at third place in tomorrow’s play-off matches. That though is tomorrow, and today is all about survival. Bermuda could make life easy for themselves, and if they don’t, it’s going to be a very long, and stressful day for the team and their supporters in Dubai and at home.In short:Hong Kong (net run rate -0.525): Must beat Namibia, or avoid taking a hammering, and hope neither Bermuda nor Uganda win.Bermuda (-0.67): Must beat UAE and hope Hong Kong and Uganda both lose. If Bermuda lose, they are relying on Namibia to hammer Hong Kong, and still need Uganda to loseUganda (-1.516): Must win, and hope that Hong Kong and Bermuda both lose. With a vastly inferior run rate they need Hong Kong and Bermuda to both lose by big margins if they were to lose and survive.StandingsP W L Pts NetRRUAE 4 4 0 8 +1.615Namibia 4 3 1 6 +2.259PNG 4 2 2 4 -0.932Hong Kong 4 1 3 2 -0.525Bermuda 4 1 3 2 -0.67Uganda 4 1 3 2 -1.516
