Bermuda to lose ICC funding after relegation
DUBAI SPORTS CITY (UAE won toss) - UAE, 257 for nine, beat Bermuda, 214 all out, by 43 runsBermuda have been relegated to Division Three of the World Cricket League after losing to UAE today in Dubai.Needing 258 to win, Bermuda were well placed at 161 for three, but the loss of David Hemp (36) triggered a familiar collapse that saw them lose their last seven wickets for just 53 runs.In the end, Bermuda were relegated by the tiniest of margins, being pushed out by Hong Kong, on net run rate. Hong Kong, who lost to Namibia by three wickets today, finished with -0.44, and Bermuda on -0.70.The miniscule difference could well have been made up if Bermuda had seen out their 50 overs, but, as was the case on several occasions this week, that was something they failed to do, and they eventually lost with two overs remaining. Also relegated were Uganda, who narrowly lost to Papua New Guinea by just two runs. A win for them yesterday and they would leap-frogged both PNG and Bermuda.Relegation means a loss of ICC High Performance status for Bermuda, and some $350,000-$400,000 worth of funding that goes with it.The result also puts the future of head coach David Moore, and Bermuda Cricket Board chief executive Neil Speight in some doubt, especially with the significant reduction in the sport's grant from Government.Players such as Lionel Cann, who retired once from International cricket following the demotion to Division Two in 2009, and Irving Romaine may also have played their last games for the Island. And it would be no surprise if they announced they were stepping down in the next couple of days.Moore has already hinted that he will look to the under-19s, and even the under-15s for the players who will try and regain Bermuda's Division Two status in 18 months time.Whether David Hemp will still be captain is also open for debate. The Bermuda skipper said immediately after the game that he would like to remain in the team, but said the ultimate decision lay with the BCB, and he would abide by that.* Read on our Follow It Live site what people had to say about this defeat and their thoughts on the future of cricket: http://www.royalgazette.com/section/live
