Players' attitude has to improve if cricket is to improve

Dear Sir,First of all, let me express my sincere thanks and gratitude to The Royal Gazette and Mr. Josh Ball for bringing Bermuda the Follow It Live commentary of the ICC Division 2 World Cricket League Tournament in Dubai via the internet last week. I watched with great anticipation and participated in all of the matches from 3 am until they were over.We all know by now that Bermuda lost all but one match and therefore came last and are now relegated to the third division. After the final match, viewers of Follow It Live were asked to make comments and or ask questions about Bermudas performance and some of them were posted in Josh Ball's sports column in Fridays paper.Well Mr. Editor, if the cricket team played with as much passion and venom as some of viewers displayed in their remarks, Bermuda would still be in the second division. Some remarks were that some players need to retire. Some are there just for the travel. Coach Moore is the problem. The Board needs to resign. Funds for cricket should be given to sailing and other sports, etc.Prior to the tournament, players have said that the training sessions and prep work was the most intense and best they have ever had. That they were more prepared for the tournament then previous tournaments and confident of staying in the 2nd Division or even winning it.Well the players let themselves down. A lack of application, mental toughness and untimely or wrong decision making was the downfall of most of the players for most of the games. In a sports report last week, one of the players said that Bermuda is to good for the third division and if they go down, they will come right back up. This may be so but if they do not change their mental attitude about cricket they will not progress. They will end up being the best in division 3 or the worst in division 2.All of us who have a cricket heart need to watch the attitudes and demeanors of the players when they return to local cricket. It is pathetic and sad to watch a national player lower his standards overnight. For years we have seen our national team players drop and ignore the national team standards once they get back to their clubs. The Board relies on these players to take these national practices to the clubs. The other club players are watching and following their lead. Many of the National Team players are team captains, coaches or both and most are senior players in their clubs. The BCB should post the Players Practices and Behaviors in the newspaper for the public can see what all cricketers should be doing or not doing. Let me say, there are some players who are disciplined and well mannered and try their best but they are quiet and go un-noticed. It's the club stars who are not following the standards and are being watched by the others. The clubs should also adopt and ensure that the national cricket standards are kept. It is hard to get players to conform to national level when they do not have the same standards at the club. All of what I am saying is to develop the mental attitude. Players must prepare for a match the night before. Mental preparation towards the game is most important. Most national coaches say that our Bermuda players have a natural talent for cricket. If National Team Players want to give back to Bermuda cricket, just take the BCB training standards and disciplines back to the clubs and keep it up. Over the years, players bad behaviour on and off the field has increased and the response to the disciplinary reward by the Board is “I don't care, I can still play County and Cup Match”The Board can only suspend a player from matches, it cannot suspend a player from cricket. All cricket in Bermuda is supposed to be governed and sanctioned by the BCB and yet they have no power over these two matches and some players put County and Cup Match before Country. They actually get more disappointed and depressed when they are not picked to play County and Cup Match. They don't have to do all the hard work and put in the time. They play with more guts when playing against their own. Maybe this is part of the problem. There needs to be consistency between the clubs and the board. Clubs need to have regular rap sessions with their players off the field. Cricket is not all bat and ball.Gerald L. BeanPaget
