Budget bites as BCB move elite games

Bermuda Cricket Board’s cash crisis has claimed its first victim, with the Elite Player League being moved from the National Sports Centre to various club grounds. The BCB said in a statement yesterday that ‘due to financial restrictions the BCB is unable to afford hosting the Elite Player League fixtures at the National Sports Centre and we are exploring the option of putting games at various club grounds’.It reportedly costs the governing body some $1300 a day to rent the facility, and they have opted to save the money and have shifted this weekend’s opening matches to Southampton Rangers instead. However, moving the game to club grounds largely defeats the purpose of the new league, which was created to allow the Island’s best players to play against each other on larger pitches. There is still the possibility of later rounds being played at the NSC though, with Sean Tucker, the chairman of the NSC Board of Trustees, saying they ‘want to have cricket there’.“We’ve been preparing the wicket for this Elite League for a few months,” said Tucker, “and then I got this email yesterday from the BCB, to say that they were assuming the fees hadn’t been reduced, and that they weren’t going to be able to hold them (EPL games) there.“But we haven’t had any discussions with them (about reducing fees), and we’re happy to talk to them. In fact the only reason I haven’t got back to them is that I’m away. I was going to send an email to ask to meet, I’m back this weekend, we’d like to host them up there.“I’ve had preliminary talks with (BCB vice president) Allen Richardson about maybe working something out, and I told him that I would, but we haven’t discussed any numbers or anything like that.“We’re happy to work something out. We want to have cricket there, and we want to use the wicket, and it’s a fantastic venue for the league, and even night cricket. We want to encourage that, we just have to have the discussions.“It’s better to have some cricket, than none at all.”The BCB’s email to Tucker regarding fees is understood to have been the second one that was sent to the Trustees. Another email, sent at the beginning of the week, requesting information on costings still hasn’t been replied to.It would not be the first time that a sporting body have been forced to move games from the NSC because of the prohibitive cost of staging an event there.Bermuda Hogges originally played their home games at the national stadium, but eventually switched them to BAA Field because they were being charged $2000 per game to use the venue. The BCB are due to announce the make up of the four teams that will compete in the EPL at some point today. Four teams are expected to take part, and will keep the names of the teams that competed in the All-Star matches at the end of last season. They were an Alma “Champ” Hunt XI, Calvin “Bummy” Symonds XI, Mackie Simmons XI and Clarence Parfitt XI.
