Brangman: Rec can win league this year
Devonshire Rec. skipper Derrick Brangman is adamant that his side have what it takes to become champions this year and will look to hammer that point home when they play defending champions Southampton Rangers tomorrow.Rangers are currently second from bottom with a solitary point after back-to-back losses to St. David’s in their opening two games.Devonshire, however, are sitting in a good position in fourth place and have a chance to stake a claim as the in-form side on the Island while putting another nail in the champions’ coffin so early in the season.Noting that his side should be undefeated, Brangman believes his club can shed the underdog tag, with which they are constantly labelled, and show their true potential, starting tomorrow at the Oval.“It is a big game for both sides, we want the points to stay in contention with those at the top of the table while them being the champions will want to get on track and off the bottom of the league,” said Brangman.“We have been training hard since the beginning of the pre-season and nothing has changed thus far, the team is focused on what is in front of us and that is how we will approach every game this year.“We feel it is a good chance to show people what we are capable of. Obviously it makes your job easier by winning games earlier and we also feel have a point to prove since everyone calls us the underdogs in a lot of our matches.“Our performances so far have been pleasing. Obviously losing to St. George’s in the first game when we were in a good position was disappointing but we bounced back with a good win over PHC.”One of the chief factors in the club’s belief that they will win some sort of silverware this year is the return and form of Brangman’s brother, Ricardo jr., and cousin Dean Stephens. The duo returned to the ‘Den’ after short stints with PHC and possess two of the highest averages so far, Brangman jr. sitting on a lofty 96 average while Stephens isn’t far behind on 56.Their formidable early order partnership is likely to put the side in winning positions throughout the season, but skipper Brangman believes it is the balance of the team that allows the batsmen to have fun while at the crease.Crediting coaches Herbie Bascome and father Ricardo Brangman sr. for giving the side the mentality they have, the Somerset Cup Match player reckons the Island will see how good the side really is in weeks to come.“It is important to keep up with the pace of the leaders early on in a season, but it is still early and we haven’t played the top teams yet so we will see how it all goes.“Herbie and my father are putting us through or paces just as if it was pre season, there isn’t any letting down so we feel very prepared.“To have Dean and Ricardo back is definitely a huge advantage, they both have been in fine form and have had some good partnerships already this year, so if they continue to do what they do and the rest of the players contribute we will be in good positions every game.“It is a team game and at the end of the day you win and lose as a team, so we just need to put ourselves in good positions and capitalise on our opponents’ mistakes. If we can do this then there isn’t any reason why we can’t succeed.“I’m not surprised personally by how we have performed so far. We can improve in some areas but we have played as a team for the most part and if we can continue this then we should be fine in the long run.”Elsewhere in the Premier Division tomorrow, PHC look to hand St. David’s their first loss of the season when they face off at PHC Field, while the two remaining unbeaten teams clash at Somerset Cricket Club when Willow Cuts play St. George’s.Young Men’s Social Club welcome Bailey’s Bay to Wellington Oval.In First Division action, Cleveland play Warwick at Sea Breeze Oval, Somerset travel to White Hill Field to play Somerset Bridge, while Flatts face Western Stars at Lords. All games to start at 11 am.
