Borden out of Americas tour

David Moore names his latest Bermuda squad this week and one player that won’t be in it is Delyone Borden. The St David’s spinner wrote to the Bermuda Cricket Board on Friday making himself unavailable for the ICC Americas Tournament in Florida next month, and the move is likely to spell the end of his international career. While it is not the first time that Borden has opted out of a tour, the BCB are believed to have finally run out of patience with the talented bowler and even if he did make himself available again, he is unlikely to be considered in the future.Borden’s decision came after he missed the first two matches in the national team trials and also explains his absence from the third one on Saturday, which Bermuda Red won by 12 runs taking a 2-1 series lead.Kevon Fubler could well be the main beneficiary of the situation, with his left arm finger-spin giving Moore another option in attack. Fubler has bowled well during the trial series, and with the wicket in Florida known to turn it seems likely that spin will form a large part of the Bermuda attack.“We’re looking for someone to spin away from the bat, in international cricket we need someone to spin away from the bat, and now that Dwayne’s (Leverock) has retired we’re obviously looking to fill that void,” said Moore.“We’ve obviously got to work out strategy out as well. You’re in a situation at Fort Lauderdale where, in the past, it’s spun a lot, I can’t imagine it’s going to change a great deal since our Under-19s tour (in January) when it spun a heck of a lot. So we’re looking to load up with guys that can spin.“The interesting thing with our off-spinners is that they all bowl different, Gilbert bowls one way, Rodney bowls another, etc, so, it’s (selection) going to be very interesting, that’s for sure.”Moore’s final squad is expected to have a very different look to the one which travelled to Dubai in April, with Kamau Leverock, Fubler and Dennico Hollis all in with a chance of making the side.Ultimately the make-up of the bowling attack will depend on which quick bowlers Moore chooses to include, with Malachi Jones, George O’Brien, Justin Pitcher and Kyle Hodsoll all making strong arguments for their inclusion.Jones’ return to form this weekend has come at an opportune moment, for both him and Moore. The fast bowler took two wickets in the Saturday’s third trial match, and that, coupled with a brutal 60 yesterday for Willow Cuts, should see him make the trip.In the batting department, the likes of Oronde Bascome, Chris Douglas, Fiqre Crockwell and OJ Pitcher are all battling for a spot, and tomorrow’s final trial match at the National Sports Centre could go a long way to deciding who goes and who doesn’t.Despite Jason Anderson’s 48 on Saturday, it seems likely that Chris Foggo, who scored 27 will go as wicketkeeper. Anderson is likely to pay the price for a one-day strike rate that often fails to get above 50 percent, something that Bermuda can ill-afford in the shortest version of the game.Possible Bermuda squad: D Hemp, C Douglas, C Foggo, L Cann, D Stovell, S Outerbridge, D Hollis, K Leverock, K Fubler, J Gilbert, R Trott, K Hodsoll, M Jones, J Pitcher.
