Rodney’s return sparks Bay celebration

Bailey's Bay wicketkeeper Sinclair Smith leaps with delight as he and his team-mates celebrate taking a Cleveland wicket during the first round of the Eastern Counties Cup at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday. Bay won by four-wickets.

Bailey’s Bay, 201 for six, beat Cleveland County, 200 all out, by four wicketsRodney Trott sank to his knees at the non-striker’s end, pumped his right fist once, and then disappeared from view under a mass of joyous Bailey’s Bay supporters celebrating their team’s Eastern Counties Cup win.Trott made a triumphant return to the Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday, scoring an unbeaten 67, which included the all important winning run, to guide his side to a four-wicket win in a match they could so easily have lost. The spinner, who had been contemplating taking some time away from the game, came to the crease with Bay struggling slightly on 102 for four, and shared in stands of 34 with skipper Stephen Outerbridge (34), 54 with Irving Romaine (14) and then, crucially, put on 43 for the sixth wicket with Sinclair Smith (16 not out) to see Bay home with little more than 12 overs to spare.“It meant a lot, it really did,” said Trott. “I’d been thinking about taking a break, but it was the Bay fans and the community that kept me going. So I said ‘let me come out and play some cricket’, and this is for everybody. This is for the Bay people, even for the Bay team, I did it for them.“County means to us . . . it’s not just about the team, and the people who are involved in Bay, it’s about the whole parish, the whole community, that’s what I think County is about. Everybody here has supported us, and it’s for them too.”Trott’s return couldn’t have come at a more opportune time for his home-town club, who wobbled along the way to chasing down Cleveland’s meagre total of 200 and might have had a fight on their hands if they had been asked to chase 250.At one stage, with Allan Douglas Jr firing the Bay bowlers to all parts of the ground it looked like they might get it as well. The St George’s Cup Match player hammered a succession of sixes in his 47, and with 15 overs remaining Cleveland were on course to post a defendable total despite being 194 for eight.Douglas though mistimed an attempted flick off his legs and sent a Kyle Hodsoll ball straight down Lateef Trott’s throat at deep mid-wicket. That left Stephen Outerbridge to make Levar Talbot his third victim of the innings and complete an impressive Bay bowling performance that never let Cleveland get ahead.Hodsoll got things off to a flying start when he ran out opener Jordan Wilkin without a run being scored, and despite a typically agressive 50 from Dion Stovell, Cleveland were on the back foot from the off.Wickets fell regularly, and only useful knocks of 21 from Mishael Paynter and Damali Bell kept Cleveland moving towards a decent total. Douglas’ arrival at the crease briefly gave the holders the initiative, but Stephen Outerbridge took two wickets in one over to remove Makai Young and Hasan Durham and from 175 for six, Cleveland were 175 for eight and struggling.Defending 200 was always going to be a tough task, and Cleveland nearly managed it, and might have won if some things had gone their way. Bell had a good shout for lbw against Terryn Fray turned down in the first over, and Rodney Trott was dropped at point towards the end of the run chase.Inbetween Bay gave their fans a couple of scares, not least when the loss of Stephen Outerbridge left them 102 for four. Trott and Romaine then put on 54 before Romaine tried to pound a ball from Durham out of the ground and was caught by Mishael Paynter at long-off.With Stovell trapping David Lovell lbw the following over, Bay were 158 for six and wobbling once more. But Trott continued to keep his head, and slowly, but surely, kept his side crawling towards their target. At the other end Smith did exactly what was required of him, which was to support Trott, pick up runs when he could, and not do anything silly. Within sight of victory Trott was dropped with Bay 187 for six, and the game was over soon after.“We bowled well to keep them under 200, because that was a real good batting wicket,” said Trott. “It was a good team effort, but that’s what it takes to win.“Cleveland played well too, they scared us at the end, got Irving and Stephen out, but overall we came out victorious and I’m just going to enjoy the moment right now.”
