This was my most important innings - Cann
St George’s talisman Lionel Cann feels his batting heroics in his side’s dramatic victory over Somerset was the most important of his Cup Match career.Cann, who was hailed as “Mr Cup Match” by his skipper Oronde Bascome, held his nerve to guide the East Enders over the finish line during a tense finale with an unbeaten 49 yesterday. When Cann arrived at the crease St George’s were wobbling at 83 for five still 65 runs shy of their required total with Somerset smelling blood thanks to the bowling brilliance of spinner Joshua Gilbert. But Cann single-handedly swung the pendulum back in St George’s favour, steering their opponents away from the brink of victory to leave a heartbroken Somerset reflecting on what might have been.Had the unfortunate Gilbert not spilled a sharp chance when Cann played a loose shot to point, then it’s probable Somerset would have regained the coveted trophy with their first win at Wellington Oval since 1981.Instead, Cann mercilessly made them pay for letting him off the hook, smashing a six and a four off the last two balls of Malachi Jones’ over to send the St George’s faithful into raptures.“They had their chance to get me out, but the ball slipped through (Gilbert’s) hands,” said Cann, who was embroiled in an entertaining duel with Somerset’s Jones, on one occasion using his bat to smack the paceman on his rear following a colourful exchange of words.“I’ve scored a century, I’ve scored 990 runs, but this tops them all because I’m playing with my youngsters. I was a youngster when we had guys like Charlie (Marshall), Clay (Smith) and Clevie (Wade), but they’ve all retired and so I’m helping us rebuild.”After four successive draws, Cann said it was crucial this year’s Classic saw a result and insisted St George’s never once contemplated eking out a draw.“When I came in we needed 70 runs but I never panicked,” said Cann. “The wicket wasn’t playing too sharp but I backed myself to get the job done.“We were never going for a draw; Bermuda needed to see a win today and this match was never going to end in a draw.”St George’s victorious captain Bascome hailed Cann’s inspirational knock, and said he believed he had answered his own critics who didn’t believe he deserved the captaincy.“Lionel is our Mr Cup Match, he always comes to the battle for us,” said Bascome, who was skippering St George’s for a second year. “We were debating when to send Lionel into bat, and I think we did the right thing by sending him in when we did because he pulled it off for us.“This is a very special moment for me. I felt I answered my critics today; I prepared well and did my homework.“I have to give Somerset a lot of praise; they helped make Cup Match this year, but in the end our talent and personality saw us through.”
