Crockwell: It was nice to silence the critics

St David’s, 112 for two, beat –Willow Cuts, 108 all out, by eight wicketsFiqre Crockwell said his Cup Match half century proved that hard work pays off, and was a nice way to silence his critics.Crockwell’s 54 at the top of the order laid the foundations for St George’s thrilling win last Friday, proving that he can handle the pressure of the big occasion. The St David’s batsman has come in for his fair share of abuse this season from opposing players and spectators alike, all convinced he isn’t worthy of his place in the Bermuda team. Some spectators were even questioning his appearance in the Classic on the first morning, suggesting that he was over-rated as a batsman.Crockwell has heard all this before of course, and was delighted that his innings came at just the right time and in the perfect place.“That (criticism) motivates me pretty much, it doesn’t affect me, it just drives me to do better and prove them wrong. I just went out there to play my game, not hold nothing back, just do what I know that I could do,” said Crockwell.“I was overdue pretty much for a big day. I just done it for the people and to show them that hard work does pay off. It finally came at the right time, right place for me.”Chasing 148 to win Crockwell could have been forgiven for being slightly nervous, instead he said he was more relaxed than he had ever been at Cup Match.“It felt good, I wasn’t nervous,” he said. “I just it took it as a regular game, that’s all it was. In the past I have been kind of nervous (at Cup Match) but it seemed like this one I felt real comfortable, you know, and I just took it to them.”Yesterday Crockwell was back with his St David’s team-mates as they continued their push to win the Premier Division for the second time in three years with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Willow Cuts.On a day of low scores and little motivation following the emotional highs and lows of the previous few days, St David’s bowlers ran through a Cuts team missing several first choice players.Delyone Borden did most the damage with the ball, taking four wickets for just 15 runs, while Del Hollis took three for 36. For Cuts only Sheroy Fulbert (17) and Bergon Spencer (37) made it into double figures.Even then Spencer should not have been allowed to get past 10, but was dropped on the mid-wicket boundary by Loren Marshall and proceded to hammer OJ Pitcher for three consecutive sixes in one over soon after.Cuts briefly made a game of things when George O’Brien bowled Ajaun Lamb and Sheroy Fubler ran out Crockwell to reduce St David’s to 26 for two, but Borden and Pitcher then batted their side to victory with a chanceless partnership of 86.Mindful of the perilous position St George’s had found themselves in on Friday, the Cup Match stars pushed singles, waited for the bad ball and did nothing that might place their side in danger. In the end they knocked the runs off with more than 20 overs remaining. The win puts St David’s well clear at the top of the Premier Division, and they can all but seal the title with victory over St George’s, who lost at home to Southampton Rangers yesterday.“We’re in a good position right now,” said Crockwell, “St George’s lost, and if we beat them next week we should have it (the league) covered.”
