St. David’s close in on Premier title

Games at either end of the –Island this weekend could go a long way to deciding the fate of clubs at opposite ends of the Premier Division.

League leaders St David’s take on second-placed St George’s at Wellington Oval knowing a win would all but seal a second title in three years.

Meanwhile, defending champions Southampton Rangers are battling to avoid relegation to the First Division and need to beat Bailey’s Bay if they are keep in touch with the teams above them.

Second from bottom and struggling badly Rangers are a point adrift of Devonshire Rec, who play bottom club PHC on Sunday, having played a game more.

Defeat would leave Rangers playing catch-up for the remainder of the season. However, while the relegation battle seems likely to go down to the wire the title race is almost over.

St David’s are 32 points clear of nearest challengers St George’s, and despite having played a game more than their East End neighbours will be champions in everything but name should they win.

While there will be six rounds of matches left to play it would seem inconceivable that the Warriors would lose to sides they have beaten quite comfortably once, or in some cases twice, already this season.

Sunday’s encounter has lost some of its bite following St George’s defeat to Rangers last weekend. The home side know they will have to win in order to stand any chance of catching their close rivals.
