Rec are facing a make or break weekend

Devonshire Rec’s struggling cricket team held clear the air talks this week ahead of their crunch relegation battle with Southampton Rangers on Saturday.Internal disputes and growing frustrations at a season which has steadily declined after starting with so much promise has seen Rec’s fractious team spirit lead to defeat on more than one occasion.Despite that Rec all-rounder Kameron Fox is convinced they can beat Rangers, but said it would all depend on which Rec team showed up to play a side they thumped by eight wickets at the start of the season.“We had a team meeting to let everybody express how they feel, to get it all out,” said Fox. “And then with the challenge that’s there (Rangers), it’s not a big issue of ‘can we beat them’, it’s ‘which Devonshire Rec’s going to show up to beat them’. That’s our biggest problem right there.“We let everybody speak up, there is a lot of internal stuff out there, they (the players) just needed to express themselves, get it out and move on with the cricket.”Rec, who are fifth, and Rangers, a place below them, are fighting it out to avoid the drop and with just four games of the season left defeat for either on Saturday could spell disaster.Rangers have a slight advantage however as they still have 13 points from their second game against Social Club, which was scheduled for Sunday before Social Club withdrew from the league, to add to their total. It all adds up to what Fox calls a ‘make or break’ weekend for his club. “It definitely is (make or break),” he said. “We’ve got to take it as a final, we’ve got to put all the little petty stuff behind us.“Devonshire Rec have a lot of small issues that they have to deal with as a club, other than that we can beat any team on the day it’s just that we have to come together and play as a team.“Like I tell the guys, only Devonshire Rec can beat Devonshire Rec, that’s our biggest downfall right there, ourselves.”Fox said that part of the problem was that several members of the team were not used to being in pressure situations and that their first instinct was to quit rather than fight for the win.“Everybody is capable because we have a lot of good players out there, but it’s just because of the mindset,” said Fox. “They’re not used to being winners, not the younger generation of Devonshire Rec anyway, so it’s all a new learning process. They just have to mature in life and it will come out in their cricket. That’s what I feel.“We’ve beaten Rangers already, and at that time we had more togetherness we were on a high, but now it feels like one day it’s happy, the next day it’s sad. I don’t know if that’s the mentality of the players, you know.“We’re just trying to show them that it’s been rough because they aren’t used to it. They are used to playing in the lower divisions, so when it gets tough they would rather give up instead of digging deep and we’re just trying to implement (some change) and show them how they get over the hurdle.”While victory over Rangers wouldn’t guarantee Rec’s safety, defeat would leave them needing other results to go their way, especially as their next two games are against Cuts, this Sunday and in two week’s time.Rec and Rangers though aren’t the only ones in danger of joining already relegated Social Club and PHC, who are realistically facing life in the First Division next season, especially as their appeal for the points in a row over Dean Stephen’s eligibility is believed to have failed.St George’s have won only once in their last five league matches, and only five points separates them in fourth and Rangers who occupy the final relegation spot. The East End side do have a game in hand however, they face PHC on Saturday, and also have another default win over Social Club to take into account.“It’s going to be an interesting weekend,” said Fox, “we’ve got Rangers and Willow Cuts and that’s going to make or break our season right there.“St George’s are in hot water, PHC have to win to give themselves a chance but they’re going to have to get maximum points in that game.“The only team that is really clear is basically St David’s, it’s a big dogfight down there right now.”
