Stephens row prompts change in approach
Cricketers found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute now risk being suspended from playing in “all cricket” with bans to be “defined by a specific time period”.Bermuda Cricket Board’s (BCB) executive committee enforced the new policy earlier this week after ratifying their technical committee’s decision to “allow the original decision to stand” from Devonshire Recreation Club’s controversial August 7 Premier clash with PHC at PHC Field. The Central Counties champions won the match by 37 runs but were forced to sweat it out for the points after being accused by PHC of fielding an “ineligible player”.PHC claimed that Devonshire all-rounder Dean Stephens had yet to serve an eight-match suspension and appealed for the points. However, the BCB’s executive ruled that the player had in fact served his suspension “under established precedent for calculating disciplinary penalties”.“The committee met and the decision was made to uphold the original result,” said BCB technical committee chairman Allen Richardson.“Therefore Devonshire get to keep the points.”PHC’s bid to obtain the precious points hinged largely on whether or not Devonshire’s two matches with Young Men’s Social Club would count towards Stephen’s ban - that came into effect June 25 - even though the Pembroke club had dropped out of the league due to a player shortage. However, in a letter addressed to the representatives of both clubs the BCB concluded that Devonshire’s matches with Social Club should count “if one was suspended”.The committee also took into consideration that Stephens would have been included in PHC’s Western Counties squad as a guest player for their July 2 second round clash with Willow Cuts had he not been banned following a heated confrontation with umpires James McKirdy and Hector Watson.PHC themselves acknowleged as much in their report to the BCB and also counted Devonshire’s July 10 league clash with Young Men’s Social Club towards Stephen’s ban.The BCB’s technical committee also included Devonshire’s August 6 Central Counties match with Western Stars and Somerset Cricket Club’s only Cup Match trial as matches the banned Stephens had served.Devonshire had maintained all along that their player had served his entire suspension, going so far as to consult with the BCB on the matter prior to their league clash with PHC.
