Allen Richardson: In his own words

On wanting to be president“My passion for the game really drives me. People say to me ‘I think you’re a fool to want to take this over right now’ but I see opportunities to improve the game. I’ll take my licks right now, but when the gravy comes along I’m –going to swim in that as well. It goes with the job.”On criticism of the Board“There are only three groups of people we have to deal with, enemies, friends or fools. Everytime they open their mouths or through their actions they show which they are. Once you have your enemies, no matter what you do, they will always say ‘you’re not doing enough, you’re not doing this’.“Now a fool just doesn’t know any better, he thinks he knows, but he doesn’t, and your friends will give you the constructive criticism when you need it.”On discipline“An umpire is almost like God. If I am voted president there will be no inbetweens when it comes to issues with an umpire. If an umpire in anyway feels threatened I will have no sympathy with a player I will deal with that, or I will inform the disciplinary committee to deal with that, at its most severe.”On the Eastern Counties row“We (the Board) have to show the leadership, we have to be out in front. I think we kind of sat back on some issues and I think it’s because in the past maybe we felt that ‘well, the Eastern Counties, that’s their competition’. But we are the governing body of cricket in Bermuda and that means all forms of the game.”On Reggie Pearman“I have to give all respect to Reg in what he has done and the amount of time he has put into Bermuda cricket. The cricketing fraternity really owe him a debt of gratitude, regardless of what they may think. I have the highest regard for Reg for the stuff he’s had to put up with over the years. He certainly deserves a medal, that’s for sure.”
