Fray in the mix for BCB presidency

Weighing his options: Lloyd Fray could challenge for BCB presidency at next month's annual general meeting

Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) second vice-president Lloyd Fray has not ruled out running for the association’s top post at next month’s AGM.The former Warwick and Flatts batsman has been urged to put his hat into the ring for the soon-to-be vacated BCB presidency and could announce his decision to run as early as next week.“I know the AGM is coming up so probably within the next week or so I could make my decision,” Fray told The Royal Gazette. “I have been approached (to run) by many in all circles but the presidency is something that I am not taking lightly.”Fray already has a lot on his plate as CEO of BTC and his workload is sure to increase when he takes on a new role with BTC’s parent company KeyTech. And whether or not he decides to have a go at the presidency hinges on his confidence and ability to balance growing work commitments and administer local cricket efficiently.“My decision will be based on whether or not I will be able to commit myself fully because based on where cricket is today it needs to have full commitment,” Fray said.“My passion is for sports and cricket definitely but I have got a lot to think about because I have just taken on a new position within the KeyTech group of companies and so I have to weigh it out and haven’t made any definitive decision at this point.”Fray said whoever succeeded outgoing BCB president Reggie Pearman at next month’s AGM will have to be a well rounded individual capable of running local cricket’s governing body in a businesslike manner.“The position of presidency can’t be taken lightly and it’s not about just understanding the sport of cricket . . . it’s more about administrating and how you can develop the game both internally and externally,” he added. “With the funding that is required . . . if you want to escalate the sport we have look at it as a business as well and that is not just understanding the game of cricket.“Whoever is successful is going to have to execute in that direction and to that job well you have to put your time in and be focused.”Earlier this week former national team captain Clay Smith announced his decision to run against BCB first vice-president Allen Richardson for the top post. Prominent lawyer and former BCB president Edward Bailey also hasn’t ruled out making a comeback.Smith said he looked forward to running against Richardson and whoever else enters the race and reckons he can garner the support needed to sweep him to victory at the polls.“There’s nothing like competition and I feel I have a lot of offer,” he added. “I’m just going to give it a shot and see how things go from there.”Richardson lost to incumbent Pearman on a tie-break during the BCB’s 2007 AGM at Devonshire Recreation Club.As of yesterday, no date had been announced for the upcoming AGM nor deadline confirmed for candidates to submit their nomination forms to local cricket’s governing body.
