Bermuda face tough Twenty20 challenge
Bermuda will have to get past Canada, the Netherlands and Afghanistan if they want to progress from the group stages of the World Twenty20 Global Qualifiers in Dubai.David Moore’s team have been drawn in the same eight-team group as three of the top Associate nations, along with Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Denmark for the tournament next March.Bermuda might consider themselves to have been handed the slightly easier group, however, with Group B containing Ireland, Kenya, Scotland, Namibia, Uganda, Oman, Italy and the USA.Still, the format for the qualifiers means that the top three from each group will have a chance to reach the final. In a convoluted knock-out round, the sides that top the two groups will feature in the first Qualifying Final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, March 22, with the winners sealing a place in the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka next year.Meanwhile, the sides that finish second and third in the two groups will play cross-over matches. The two winners of those matches will progress to the Preliminary Final to be played on March 23.The second Qualifying Final for the second spot in the ICC World Twenty20 2012 will take place the following day, and will be between the losers of the first Qualifying Final and the winners of the Preliminary Final.A tournament final, between the winners of the two qualifying finals, will then take place on the final evening of the competition. The tournament winners will join Australia and the West Indies in Group B of the ICC World Twenty20, while the losing finalists will complete Group A which also includes defending champions England and 2007 winners India. The World Twenty20 Global Qualifiers will run from March 13-24 and will be played at five grounds in the United Arab Emirates Dubai International Cricket Stadium and ICC Global Cricket Academy grounds No.1 and No.2 in Dubai, Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium and the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
