Hemp stays on as Bermuda skipper

David Hemp

David Hemp will continue his role as captain of Bermuda’s senior national cricket squad. The former English County player has been named as captain of the Island’s 14-man squad that will compete at next month’s ICC World Twenty20 global qualifiers in Dubai. There had been speculation that Hemp’s days as Bermuda’s national captain could be over in the lead up to next month’s tournament.Hemp’s captaincy has come under scrutiny from some of his team-mates who claim they would rather be led by someone they can relate to on a more personal level. It is also understood that disgruntled national team players had objected to having to prepare for competition in the absence of their captain who resides in the UK.National squad players aired their grievances over Hemp during a meeting with Bermuda Cricket Board’s (BCB) newly formed Selection/Outreach Committee who in turn brought the matter to the attention of the BCB’s hierarchy.Hemp succeeded Irving Romaine as Bermuda’s captain in 2009.But with the national squad currently in a rebuilding phase there has been mixed reaction as to whether or not the ex-Glamorgan batsman should be allowed to continue serving as Bermuda’s captain.Former BCB executive Gary Fray believes Hemp is still the right man for the job.“The game today is very tactical and you really have to know what you are doing and I think Hemp has that experience and knowledge that hopefully he will pass on to a local, providing they are up to par,” he said.Fray also lashed out at those players calling for Hemp to be stripped of the captaincy.“The players should concentrate on playing and making one hundred percent commitment and leave the administration to the administrators,” he added. “It’s too much of the players interfering with the administrative side of things and they are not playing cricket.“The last few tours we have taken out of here have been an embarrassment to this country and these players need to settle down and play the game of cricket and leave other things alone.”Ex-national team all-rounder Corey Hill believes that Hemp still has something to offer at the national level, but should not be allowed to continue on as Bermuda’s captain.“The players are not saying they don’t want Mr Hemp to be a part of the national set up, what they are simply saying is they need a hands-on captain,” he said. “If I’m a player and I was having some challenges don’t you think it would be better if I could discuss it in person with my captain?“Captains and players of any team need dialogue on a regular basis and that is not possible because of his (Hemp) geographical location.“I’m sure if Mr Hemp was located here on the Island then maybe we wouldn’t be having this discussion. But unfortunately he is not so the players have the right to voice their concerns without being scrutinised by people.”
