Hemp optimistic of qualifying chances
Bermuda can qualify for September’s ICC World Twenty20 in the United Arab Emirates next month if each player pulls their own weight. This according to team skipper David Hemp who believes the Island’s squad has the right balance to achieve its primary objective on tour.“I do believe that the team has a chance of qualifying,” he said. “The nature of 20/20 cricket means that all the games will be a test, in particular against those with ODI status.“But we certainly have an opportunity to progress if we play to our potential.”Bermuda will be among the 16 ICC Associate/Affiliate countries that will compete for the two World Twenty20 spots that will go up for grabs in Dubai. The Island’s senior national team have been pitted in Group A along with the likes of Afghanistan, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and the Netherlands and will kick off their qualifying campaign against the Danes March 13 at the ICC Global Cricket Academy Oval.Afghanistan, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands and Kenya are the only non Test-playing countries to appear in the ICC World Twenty20 since the tournament’s inception in 2007.Earlier this week Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 14-man squad that has stepped up its preparations for Dubai. The squad boasts five seamers, four spinners and at least ten specialist batsmen.“The squad selected provides a wide number of bowling options while still allowing a strong batting group,” said national coach David Moore.Even though the squad is missing several key players such as Dean Minors, Malachi Jones, Delyone Borden and Chris Foggo to name a few, skipper Hemp is convinced that the players that have been chosen will be equal to the task.“The squad is a good balance between experience and youth,” he said. “There are numerous playing options with both bat and ball with several players possessing the ability to perform a variety of roles if needed.”Hemp’s captaincy has come under the scrutiny of some of his Bermuda team-mates who have called for the former English County player to be stripped of the leading role. When given the opportunity to comment on the situation the stylish left-handed batsman steered well clear of the controversy that has impacted on Bermuda’s ICC World Twenty20 preparations.“I have nothing to say on the matter at this stage,” Hemp said.Bermuda’s senior national squad departs March 9 for Dubai where they will play seven group matches in as many days.“It is a very tight and challenging schedule for all teams with one game a day,” Moore said. ”Our players will have to look after themselves while on tour to make sure that they have recovered sufficiently to perform at their best day in day out.”
