St George’s set for Bascome talks
Speculation that Herbie Bascome could become St George’s’ new cricket coach has intensified.
According to well-informed sources Bascome is expected to meet with club officials in the very near future to discuss the terms of a deal that could potentially see him take on coaching duties at Wellington Oval during the upcoming season.
Bascome comes highly qualified for the job as he is a certified West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Level II coach who assisted former national coach Gus Logie at the 2007 ICC World Cup in the Caribbean.
He is also the father of St George’s skipper Oronde Bascome who captained the East Enders to a two-wicket win against Somerset in last summer’s Cup Match classic at Wellington Oval.
St George’s have been without a coach since Clay Smith resigned at the end of last season to make a bid for the presidency of Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB).
Smith’s tenure as coach peaked with last summer’s Cup Match triumph over Somerset but then flat lined after St George’s were relegated from the Premier Division.
So far St George’s officials have been reluctant to comment on potential candidates they are leaning towards to fill the vacant post.
However, club sources say Bascome is expected to meet with St George’s’ top brass early next month to thrash out details of a potential coaching deal.
