St George’s and Somerset Bridge both failed to field teams for their matches against an Evening League XI and Bailey’s Bay respectively.Bridge also pulled out of their opening First Division game yesterday against PHC and are believed to still owe Bermuda Cricket Board a substantial amount of money in dues.Of the games that were played, champions Southampton Rangers got their campaign off to a winning start, while St David’s, who have dominated the competition since its inception, hammered Devonshire Rec in their first game.Rangers eased to a seven-wicket win over Somerset Cricket Club on the back of a tight spell of bowling from Quinton Sherlock, and some clean hitting from Kwame Tucker.Sherlock took four wickets as Somerset were restricted to 93 for eight, and then Tucker belted an unbeaten 58 as the home side finished on 99 for three. In the East, St David’s never looked like losing against a Rec side who just managed to get past 100 in their 20 overs. Despite a typically brutal 38 from Dean Richards, Rec only managed 104 for seven and Delyone Borden (54) and OJ Pitcher (40) saw their side to a convincing 10-wicket win.The other big winners on Saturday were Willow Cuts who romped to a 100-run win over PHC on the back of a hard-hitting 65 from former Zebras player Ricardo Brangman. Cuts made 182 and Kevin Fubler then picked up a couple of wickets as PHC crawled to 82 for six in their 20 overs.Overall there were some 1,377 runs scored in Twenty20 cricket over the weekend, and Cleveland made more than anyone, racking up 204 against perennial whipping boys Warwick. Despite the arrival of Lionel Cann, Warwick fell to a 55-run defeat. In the final game, Mclaren Lowe’s unbeaten 71 saw Western Stars to a six-wicket win over Leg Tappers. In a high-scoring affair. Trappers scored 178 for seven in their 20 overs with Warren Smith top-scoring with 67.Stars were in trouble for a while, losing four early wickets, but Lowe and Wayne Campbell then put on 100-run partnership for the fifth wicket to see their side home with eight balls to spare.
