Cuts county title in jeopardy after Bridge file appeal
Willow Cuts’ Western Counties title is on the line after being accused of fielding an ineligible player during Saturday’s Western Counties first round clash with Somerset Bridge Recreation Club at Southampton Oval.Bridge lost the low scoring match by 61 runs but have since launched an appeal on the grounds that Cuts’ wicketkeeper Ricardo Brangman was ineligible to play.In a brief statement forwarded to this newspaper, Somerset Bridge president and Environment Minister Marc Bean said: “I can confirm that with regret, SBRC has launched an appeal, as it is our position that Willow Cuts may have fielded an ineligible player.“We are conscious of the challenges that the Western Counties executive is facing in these times, and SBRC will govern ourselves accordingly, regardless of the determination of the appeal.”Cuts declined to comment when approached.Leading the Western Counties cup holders to victory over Bridge at the weekend was top all-rounder Malachi Jones who shone with bat and ball. The 2007 World Cup player stroked 36 and then claimed three wickets.Occasional spinner Chris Douglas also claimed three wickets while promising seamer Antonio Darrell took two.Noel Woods stroked 25 and Shawn Riley claimed four wickets in a losing cause for challengers Bridge, who also narrowly came up short against Cuts in last year’s Western Counties competition held at Somerset Cricket Club.
