Bay clinch title with dramatic win over Cuts

Bailey’s Bay, 224 for nine, beat Willow Cuts, 204 all out, by 20 runsBailey’s Bay claimed their first title since the early 1990s at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday as they clinched a dramatic 20-run win over Premier Division rivals Willow Cuts.Pitting the division’s top two sides against each other in the final weekend of the season was a fitting way to decide the destination of the title, and the match lived up to expectations. For batsman Stephen Outerbridge, the Bay skipper, it has been a long time coming for himself and Bailey’s Bay as a club and community.“The feeling won’t set in for a few days but it feels good to come away with the win,” said batsman Stephen Outerbridge. “They were 70 odd for one wicket down and we continued to do what we were told to do and in the end it worked out for us.“We have been through a lot as team this year, we have had some close calls in big matches but we are on course to win the cup.“Irving’s knock was crucial for us because it set our foundation and we went on form there.”Losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Bay posted 224 in their allotted 50 overs for the loss of nine wickets, with veteran Irving Romaine leading the way with 71.All-rounder Rodney Trott also helped himself to a valuable half century (51) to put the league leaders in a good position to seal the crucial points that would secure the title. The pair came to the crease with the Eastern County champions in peril at 113 for four in the 33rd over.Kevin Fubler and George O’Brien jr both two wickets for the hosts to restrict their opponents to a gettable target. In response, Chris Douglas set the crowd ablaze as he lashed the Bay bowling attack to all parts of the ground as Cuts were on course for victory at 71 without loss after eight overs. That would be as close as they would come, however, with wickets falling at regular intervals throughout the innings with the championships seemingly in their grasp.Dexter Basden (50) tried his best to get push on the scoring after his fellow opener fell, but found himself short of partners with a manageable run rate.Bay were spearheaded by an inspired Dennico Hollis, who claimed two wickets from eight overs and 22 runs in a crucial segment of the match, while Kyle Hodsoll also picked up two wickets for 69 runs in six overs.“When it comes to close games you I will always back my side to come through, I wouldn’t say we won the game but also I wouldn’t say that they won it either but this is what happens when the two best teams in the league play each other and the fans got a good match today,” added Outerbridge.“I have to tip my hat to them as well for putting up a fight but today showed that we have quality and depth in our team. “The title adds to Bay’s plethora of cups this year, having already won their current County and Lindo’s Twenty20 Cups.
