Rangers survive after thrashing Cleveland

Top man: Janeiro Tucker

Southampton Rangers retained their Premier Division status for next season after handing Cleveland County an emphatic 129-run defeat at Southampton Oval yesterday.Guiding Rangers to victory, which also qualified them for next season’s Belco Cup, was the returning Janeiro Tucker who smashed an unbeaten century and claimed two wickets with his gentle seam to cap a fine all round display in his first league appearance in two months.Batting at number six, the veteran all rounder thumped a boundary-filled 104 that included nine sixes and seven fours after coming to the crease with his team in a spot of bother at 110 for four.Tucker dominated two partnerships with opener Dion Stovell and the evergreen Gary Crofton that ultimately put the match beyond Cleveland’s reach. He added 73 runs for the fifth wicket with Stovell and a further 53 runs in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand with Crofton.Stovell thumped 75 in an innings containing three sixes and six fours while Croften remained unbeaten on one.Jason Wade added 20 (two fours) batting at number four while Cleveland were penalised 24 runs for a slow over rate, raising Rangers’ total of 256 for seven at the end of their allotted overs to 280.Allan Douglas Jr was the pick of the Cleveland bowling, claiming four for 59 with his off-break spin. Orthodox spinner Levarr Trott claimed two for 32 respectively.Cleveland got their reply off to a flying start with openers Aaron Adams and Jason Anderson adding 76 for the first- wicket before Rangers eventually made the breakthrough in the eight over after Aaron was caught at third man off the bowling of Tucker.Adams’ dismissal triggered a major collapse which saw seven Cleveland wickets tumble in the space of 42 runs.Adams led Cleveland’s unsuccessful run chase with a whirlwind knock of 60 that included five sixes and seven fours while Anderson added 19 (three fours) and Douglas 24 (three fours and a six) batting lower down the order before the visitors’ innings came to a close in the 30th over.Veteran seamer Crofton was by far Rangers’ best bowler with figures of four for 63, left-arm spinner Dwayne Leverock took three for 18 while Tucker had two for 16.Cleveland, who were promoted to the Premier Division at the beginning of the season, will now play the second -placed team in the First Division in a relegation/promotion play-off match at the end of the 2012 50 over campaign.Last placed Devonshire have already been relegated. Devonshire’s match against St David’s at Devonshire Rec. was called off after neither team had enough players to constitute a game.Kamau Leverock slammed a whirlwind half-century but still could not prevent a ICC Americas Select from going down to a 42- run defeat against the Windward Islands in this West Indies Cricket Board Under 19 Regional 50 over match reduced to 29 overs per side due to inclement weather. The nephew of former West Indies opener Alvin Greenidge thumped 56 from 53 deliveries that included four sixes and three fours as the ICC Americas were left stranded on 129 for eight at the end of their allotted overs in reply to Windward Islands’ 171 for nine.Leverock and opener Akash Shah (28) added 86 runs for the fifth wicket to keep the ICC Americas in with a fighting chance. But once Shah departed at the end of the 24th over, the ICC Americas lost four wickets for seven runs in the space of 11 balls to put paid to their victory hopes.Guiding the Windward Islands to its first victory of the tournament at Lime Sports Club on Saturday was opener Gidron Pope who stroked an unbeaten 72 and pacer Ray Jordan who returned figures of three for 38.The ICC Americas are due to face Jamaica today at Foursquare Oval in Barbados.
