Willow Cuts, 415, beat Warwick, 67, by 348 runs.Malachi Jones smashed a career-best 175 and Ricky Hoyte 93 as Willow Cuts thrashed a youthful Warwick side in the final of the Western Counties on Saturday at Southampton Oval. The pair, who shared in a fifth wicket stand of 196, overcame early pressure by Warwick who had the champions 33-4 after 55 minutes. And had the Warwick fielders not dropped both batsmen, including Jones on two, the outcome might have been different. And if a total of 367 posted by Cuts was not enough, Warwick were also penalised 48 runs at the end of the Cuts innings for slow overs rate which left them to chase an impossible 415. Warwick also conceded 33 extras, including 21 wides. At the 2.30 cut-off, Warwick had only bowled 39 of their 50 overs and the penalty imposed took into consideration the several sixes hit by the Willow Cuts batsmen. Cuts’ innings finally ended at 3.13, having added exactly 200 runs in the last 20 overs before the penalty runs were added.Cuts’ decision to bat first on winning the toss looked to have backfired when Chris Douglas departed for 18 and Dexter Basden, captain Dwight Basden and Ryan Shepherd all without reaching double figures as new-ball pair Gary Williams and Jordan DeSilva had Cuts in early trouble. Hoyte and Jones set about repairing the damage and by the time they were separated at 229-5 Cuts were firmly in control.Hoyte was bowled for 93 which included nine fours and four sixes and Jones continued on towards the first double century in the competition since another Cuts player, Gladwin Edness, blasted 206 against Somerset Bridge in the 1995 final. There were still plenty of overs remaining when Jones raced to 175 mark when he went for a lofty drive and was caught by Dwayne Adams on the extra cover boundary off Daniel Morgan to finish 31 runs shy of the record. Jones, who learned his cricket at Southampton Oval, hit 10 fours and 15 sixes off a Warwick bowling attack that lacked penetration to support the early work done by Williams and DeSilva.Williams, who pulled up with a hamstring injury and failed to completed his tenth over, led the bowling with three for 50 from 9.3 overs while Morgan, who completed Williams and got a wicket with his first delivery, had figures of three for 27 from 2.2 overs late in the innings. DeSilva took one for 66 off 10 overs while left arm spinners Dwayne Adams and Benjamin James both went for 70 runs for their one wicket.Warwick’s innings, which began at 3.55, lasted less than two hours as they were skidded out in 22.2 overs with DeSilva the only player in double figures with 27 from four fours. Again, the new ball pair did most of the damage, with Kavon Fubler and Jermaine Trott sharing seven wickets as Fubler claimed three for 13 from five overs and Trott four for 13 from seven overs as the challengers slumped to 39-6 after 66 minutes. Ricky Hoyte, Chris Douglas and Dwight Basden all claimed a wicket apiece as Cuts cruised towards the inevitable.
