Adams hopes to bow out with victory

Aaron Adams will wake up this morning and hope this is finally the day he gets to play on a winning team in the Eastern Counties. The veteran Cleveland batsman confirmed yesterday he will be retiring from the Eastern Counties at age 49, content that this is one half-century he won’t be reaching in the competition. But he would like this last appearance in the competition to be a winning one.Up until a few weeks ago Adams was playing in the Commercial League with Jamaican Association, but with only five teams in that league and with not much to play for, Adams decided to turn out for Cleveland in the league, where he played against Willow Cuts and Southampton Rangers. He had a knock of 60 against Rangers last weekend with all but two of his runs coming off boundaries from five sixes and seven fours ... enough to convince the club to include him in the county team for the match against Bailey’s Bay at Sea Breeze Oval.“In the Commercial there are only five teams, Jamaica couldn’t win the league and Cleveland were near the bottom so I thought I could help them out,” said Adams.“I played two games, against Willow Cuts and Rangers. I have played (Eastern Counties) for a while but have never won it, but defended it twice, so it would be nice to win it. This is definitely my last time, without a doubt. I have played with some of the younger guys’ fathers and they have always had respect for me. I’m just hoping we can pull it off.”Cleveland became Eastern Counties champions in 2010 when St. David’s opted out of the competition over a dispute with the governing body. They lost the cup in the first round last year when Bay chased down their total of 200 with the loss of six wickets. The challengers have made two changes from that team, recalling Adams and seamer Shaki Darrell. With Jason Anderson and Treadwell Gibbons not eligible to play, Cleveland will rely on the likes of Adams, Dion Stovell, Mishael Paynter, Allan Douglas and Mikai Young to carry the batting while Damali Bell, who has returned from school abroad to play, will be a key man in both departments along with captain Dennis Musson and veteran spinner Hasan Durham.Cleveland team: Dennis Musson (capt), Dion Stovell, Aaron Adams, Mishael Paynter, Shaki Darrell, Kion Butterfield, Mikai Young, Damali Bell, Lavar Talbot, Hasan Durham, Allan Douglas Jr. Res: Mikai McGowan, Rico Trott, Jordan Wilkin, Bryce Daniels.Willow Cuts have forfeited their final league match against Southampton Rangers. Cuts failed in their bid for the league title last weekend when they lost to Bailey’s Bay. First Division side Social Club have forfeited their match away to Warwick.
