Richardson to skipper Somerset Old Boys
Cup holders Somerset have been forced to appoint a new captain ahead of today’s Harris Bay and Somerset Old Boys charity cricket match at Somerset Cricket Club - for the second time. The hosts originally appointed John Tucker as captain this year after Kevin Saunders was ruled out through personal commitments. However, former Somerset Cup Match skipper Tucker is currently nursing an injury and is unable to play.In his place former Western Stars and Somerset Cup Match batsman Jeff Richardson will lead the cup holders into battle. The aggressive batsman is confident his team can retain the cup.“I am confident we will be equal to the task,” he said. “As holders of the cup the onus is on the opposition to try and get it so we will see how badly they want it.”Richardson, who helped coach Somerset’s victorious Cup Match team this summer, is honoured to be part of an event that has raised thousands of dollars for local charities over the past 60 years.“This is a charity event and I love taking part in events of this nature,” he said. “Keeping things in perspective, this is a very fun filled occasion and I want to make sure I keep it that way.“There are bragging rights at stake and I have basically been told that it’s my job to keep the cup in Somerset.”The cup holders have named a star-studded team this year that includes at least five former Somerset Cup Match players.Challengers Harris Bay will be led by Randall Woolridge.Harris Bay’s team includes only one former Cup Match player in ex- St George’s star all-rounder Noel Gibbons.Part proceeds from today’s match, which gets underway at 11am, will go to the Bermuda Heart Foundation.Last Sunday saw opposing players attend a church service at Marsden Methodist Church.Somerset Old Boys: Jeff Richardson (capt), Perry Maybury, Anthony Bailey, Anthony Burchall, Marc Bean, Denzill Dill, Gladstone Robinson, Benard Brangman, Conrad Lister, Vance Gilbert, John Bremar, Wayne Ball, Jerry-Lynn Simons, Mark Trott, Michael Corday.Harris Bay: Randall Woolridge (capt), Herdon Smith, Eugene Simmons, Albert Jenkins, Noel Gibbons, Dennis Wainwright Jr, John Richardson, Jerry Jones, Brendan Woolridge, Kevin Lapsley, Kurt Wade, Millet Bean, William Weldon, Colin (Bo) Smith, Andre Smith, Terry Smith.
