Somerset Old Boys edge past Harris Bay
Somerset Old Boys defeated their counterparts from Harris Bay by 32 runs to retain the trophy in a dramatic match that went right down to the wire at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday. The hosts rattled up 160 all out in 32.5 overs after being sent in to bat and then dismissed Harris Bay for 128 in 41.2 overs.Spearheading Somerset’s victory charge was skipper Jeff Richardson and seamer Vance Gilbert.Middle order bat Richardson stroked a breezy 31 that included two fours and a six to help his team recover from an early collapse. Gilbert then returned match-winning figures of four for 30 to cap a fine all round display with bat and ball.At one stage the challengers threatened to spoil Somerset’s party after being poised at 104 for six.But a late batting collapse saw Harris Bay lose their remaining wickets for the addition of 24 runs that ultimately dashed their hopes of dethroning Somerset who were forced to sweat it out to the very end.Gilbert sealed Somerset’s hard fought win in dramatic fashion, claiming the wickets of tailenders Jerry Jones (one) and Terry Smith for a golden duck off successive deliveries.Fellow seamer Denzil Dill claimed two for 28 to hold his end of the bargain while there were two run outs.Willie Weldon led the Harris Bay run chase batting at number four with a boundary laden 44 that included three fours and two sixes. Tailenders Johnny Richardson (37) and Keith Lapsley (25) also managed good starts at the crease but failed to turn them into big knocks.Earlier, Somerset found themselves wobbling at 70 for five before the tail wagged to carry the cup holders to a respectable total which ultimately proved beyond Harris Bay’s reach.Dill smashed 21 batting at number ten while number eight bat Gilbert weighed in with a useful 23. Opener Conrad Lister (20) dominated a 21-run opening stand with Shaun Roberts (ten) before seamer Brendan Woolridge made the initial breakthrough for Harris Bay.Seamer Dennis Wainwright Jr led the Harris Bay attack with match-best figures of five for 35 while leg spinner Richardson claimed three for 47 and Woolridge two for 57 respectively.Harris Bay only used three bowlers to dismiss Somerset.Former Flatts captain Weldon was chosen as man of the match. All proceeds from yesterday’s 61st Somerset and Harris Bay Old Boys Charity Cricket Match will go to the Bermuda Heart Foundation.Last Sunday saw opposing players attend a church service at Marsden Methodist Church.
