Pietersz leads Forties charge in Knockout final

Medium pacer Guyle Pietersz snapped up five wickets as Forties pulled off an improbable 27-run victory over Spring Garden Cavaliers in a low-scoring final of the Commercial Cricket League’s 40-overs-a-side Knockout Cup at Shelly Bay yesterday.Defending champions Cavaliers looked set to repeat last season’s easy win over Forties when they dismissed their opponents for 130 in 33.4 overs.Rohan Henry, Janaka Pereira, Freston Hurdle and Craig Brangman claimed two wickets apiece.David DeSilva made 33 to provide the backbone of the Forties innings, which was boosted by 21 wides.But in reply Cavaliers saw their innings in tatters after opener Ricky Hill went for 12 as Brian Holdipp (two for 28) and Robin Stovell (two for four) reduced the league champions to 34 for 35.Although Ricardo Waldron spearheaded a fightback with 29 and Chris Clarke made 25 before he was last out, Pietersz scythed through the lower order to claim five for 24 from 7.5 overs as Cavaliers were bundled out for 103 in 31.5 overs.The Evening Cricket League also produced two upsets when both league champions lost to third-placed teams in their respective Twenty20 finals at Shelly Bay on Saturday.The Associates held Premier Division champions Fine Leg Byes to 121 for six and then squeezed home with one ball and two wickets to spare.PWC Byes beat Division Two champions Renegades by 15 runs in their final, restricting Renegades to 122 for eight after posting 137 for five.
