Masters revel in Windies T20 victory

Sammy Robinson made his debut with the Bermuda Masters and performed well with the bat on the tour of Sri Lanka.

Bermuda’s Masters cricket team returned from Sri Lanka with a two-win, two-loss record, but the highlight of the two-week trip was watching the West indies win the World Twenty20 title in exciting fashion. Some 30 people from Bermuda were among the 35,000 (mostly Sri Lankan) crowd at the final between the West Indies and the hosts. Team member Hoyt Zuill and his wife Marionette were spotted on television sitting in the crowd surrounded by Sri Lankans.“They were very friendly and greet you no matter how many times they pass you,” said Zuill who enjoyed the whole experience. ‘They go out of their way for you. In the first game we didn’t even know we were playing for a trophy. At the end they had a presentation with a big trophy.”The Masters began and ended their four-match tour with victories, beating the sri Lanka Cavaliers 17 runs in their opening match. The Masters batted first in the 30-over match and scored 137-8 with Derek Wright high man with 32 while Ricky Hill scored 23 and Gladwin Edness 22. The Cavaliers replied with 120 in 25.4 overs as Johnny Richardson took three for 26 from six overs, David DeSilva two for 13 from 1.4 overs and herbie Bascome two for 21 from four overs. It was the first tour with the Masters for Richardson, Sammy Robinson and Hasan Durham.Against a much younger Burger sports Club in their second match, the Masters lost by six wickets in a 25-over match. The Masters scored 154-9 with Robinson scoring 54 and Bascome 22. Burger replied with 155-4 with Richardson, Robinson and DeSilva all picking up a wicket. The Bermuda team also lost to Fingara Cricket Club in their third match. Again the Masters batted first and scored 169-5 in 20 overs as Robinson again led the way with 48 not out while Wright scored 43 and Bascome 20. Fingara replied with 170-2 as Bascome and Lloyd Morrison took a wicket apiece. The Masters ended their tour on a winning note when they beat the Lawyers Association by eight wickets at the MCC Ground which also hosted the warm-up Twenty20 match between England and Australia. The Lawyers Association scored 155-6 in their 20 overs as Hoyt Zuill claimed two for six, Robinson two for 32 from four overs and Neil Anglin and Durham a wicket apiece from four overs. In the run chase Bascome stroked 65 before he retired while Allen Richardson scored 36 not out and Ricky Hill 20.Bascome had some gear (bats, pads and gloves) mailed to the team’s hotel from India which the Masters then donated to a school while Robinson gave some gear to their tour guide for his son.“After we had played all our games we went to a school and presented the school with the gear, a big gear bag full of gear,” Zuill revealed. “We normally do that on our tours. One of the reasons this group was put together was so that we can go on tour, play a few games and have fun.”The Masters tour party was able to watch the Super Eight matches in Colombo as well as the semi-finals and final which was preceded by the women’s semi-finals and final which saw Australia beat England in the final. The men’s final saw the West Indies win an exciting, low scoring contest. “We were sitting between the Sri Lankan people and my wife and I were on TV, dancing in the stands,” said Zuill. “It was an experience, the game could have gone either way. One hundred and third seven was no runs for Sri lanka, especially at home.“They stated off good and the West Indies just came back. With Sri Lanka, after you get past the first three, the only other person you have to worry about is angelo Matthews. Herbie Bascome was sitting there and said ‘I have a feeling it is going to be 60-6’ and it ended up being 64-6. H“We were all in the same stand, Herbie, myself and my wife were sitting together and the rest of them were a little further from us. they were shouting Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka but when the wickets starting falling they all went quiet. And then when Kulasekara hit 26 off Ravi Rampaul they came alive. Some of the people who were leaving, came back. When he got out they went real quiet again.”The Masters are planning another trip next year, possibly to Argentina or Guyana.
