Hitting pregnant ex-girlfriend earns man three months in prison

A 26-year-old Warwick man who slapped the pregnant mother of his two children was yesterday jailed for three months.Anthony Young admitted he assaulted and caused grievous bodily harm to his ex-girlfriend on January 10, on the Railway Trail in Warwick.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told Magistrates’ Court that the complainant was walking with her current boyfriend, when the defendant approached them.Young asked the boyfriend if he had a problem with him and then told his ex-girlfriend: “Don’t have this n****r calling my house.”He then slapped and spat on the woman, who was three months’ pregnant at the time, and told her that he didn’t want her living in his neighbourhood. The victim was treated in the Emergency Room at King Edward VII Memorial for facial contusions.Young was subsequently arrested in the Ord Road area.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told him yesterday: “The woman is three months’ pregnant and you slapped her in the face and knocked her down to the ground.“This was a brazen attack on a pregnant woman and you threatened to continue to do what you did.“My response to that is three months in jail, which must be seen as a deterrent for what you did.”
