Long season ahead for national team players

The 2013 cricket season has effectively started two months early for players in the national squad.By the time the new domestic season begins in earnest in May, the Bermuda players will have:Toured Barbados (leaving on Thursday) for a one-week tour for 50-over and T20 matchesVisited Fort Lauderdale, Florida in March for ICC Americas Region T20 qualifying and followed by a series of 50-over matches against the United StatesPlayed against the touring Melbourne Cricket Club from Jamaica in a three-match, 50-overs series at Somerset CCCompeted against five other teams in the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 Tournament to be staged in Bermuda from April 28 to May 5.The squad have been training three days a week under interim national team coach Arnold Manders, assistant coach Clevie Wade, national fast bowling coach Lorenzo Tucker and assistant coach Irving Romaine.Rodney Trott will captain the Bermuda team in the absence of new captain Stephen Outerbridge who is unavailable because of work commitments.Janeiro Tucker of Southampton Rangers will be the most experienced member of the squad in the absence of Lionel Cann while Malachi Jones and former captain David Hemp are also not available for the trip but England-based players Tre Manders, Greg Maybury, Kamau Leverock and Delray Rawlins are included in the squad.The team are practising indoors at Bermuda High School gym two nights a week for strength and conditioning training and technical and tactical work. They are also practising on Saturdays at various outdoor venues, undertaking game sense and tactical practices and fielding drills.The squad undertook a pre-tour camp in Bermuda over the last few days ahead of the Barbados trip where they will play a series of 50 over and Twenty20 matches against Barbados representative teams.The team will then participate in the ICC Americas Regional T20 qualifying tournament in Fort Lauderdale from March 18-22 where the top two teams will progress to the World T20 qualifying to be held in Dubai in November.Canada have already qualified from the Americas region while Bermuda and USA have previously qualified for this tournament.After that tournament the Bermuda team will stay on in Florida for four 50-over matches organised by the Bermuda Cricket Board and the United States Cricket Association in preparation of the Division 3 Tournament here in April/May involving six teams Bermuda, Uganda, Italy, Oman, USA and Nepal in round robin matches.The squad will continue their lead-up preparation to the ICC WCL Division 3 tournament by maintaining the regular training programme which includes matches against the Melbourne Cricket Club in April at Somerset. The tour is being hosted by Somerset Cricket Club to ensure that the national team has high quality opposition ahead of the major tournament in late April.A pre-tournament camp is also scheduled from April 19-24 in Bermuda as final preparation for the Division 3 Tournament from which the top two teams will progress to Division 2 and be part of the ICC World Cup qualifying tournament in New Zealand in February 2014.Bermuda’s squad for Barbados: Rodney Trott (capt), Jekon Edness, Jason Anderson, Treadwell Gibbons, Sammy Robinson, Janeiro Tucker, Dion Stovell, Dennico Hollis, Jacobi Robinson, Tre Manders, Kamau Leverock, Greg Maybury and Delray Rawlins. Manders, Leverock, Maybury and Rawlins are presently based in the UK and will join up with the squad in the Caribbean.
