Captaining Bermuda at senior level is something Rodney Trott has always aspired to do.So when the opportunity to lead the senior national cricket team on an interim basis on this month’s tour of Barbados presented itself the Bailey’s Bay all-rounder grasped it with both hands.“It’s always been an honour and privilege to be captain of the national squad and this is a dream come true basically for me,” said Trott, on the eve of the team’s departure for Barbados today. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do since childhood.“I’m tickled pink and just looking to take it one day at a time and do whatever it takes to make Bermuda be successful.”Trott has taken over the reins of the team from Bay team mate Stephen Outerbridge who is unavailable because of work commitments.Even though Outerbridge won’t be making the trip he has been very supportive of his temporary replacement.“Stephen and I talk every day to see how things are going and he is very happy for me,” Trott said. “We talk after work or at training or he calls me and asks how are things working out since he can’t make the tour.”Trott, who led Bermuda at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, will captain the senior national team in three 50 over matches and two Twenty20 fixtures in Barbados.Having not played competitive cricket outdoors since the end of the 2012 domestic season, Trott and his fellow team mates have set realistic goals to strive for on tour.“We have been talking about goal setting and things like that but we haven’t played no cricket since the cricket season ended last September, so you don’t want to set high goals that you really can’t reach,” Trott said. “As a team we are just coming together and been training together for the last two months and we haven’t really played too much cricket outside.“We’ve just set small goals for the time being and will move forward from there. This is a training camp so this is where it all starts.”This week has seen Trott reunited with ICC Americas High Performance Officer Andy Pick and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) certified coach Chris Brown who have been sharing their wealth of expertise with senior national squad players during a mini training camp at Sea Breeze Oval.Trott said the duo’s input has been very beneficial to team members.“It’s been good to have Chris and Andy here and the guys have enjoyed having them coach us,” he added. “They have taught everybody different things that guys didn’t know or hadn’t really learned yet so it’s been good.“Malachi (Jones) and myself attended a training camp with them in St Kitts so I am very familiar with them. They taught me a lot in St Kitts and the skills they taught me down there I can put to use as captain in Barbados.”Trott said team morale is presently high, with players going the extra mile in training in the lead up to the seven-day tour.“Everybody has been working hard and that’s been a bonus because everybody has been putting in the extra effort,” he added. “The things we have been working on is being together and having respect for one another.“That’s been a big thing that’s happened in the last couple of months. Guys are finally starting to respect one another and get along with one another better, and that’s what it’s going to take for us to be successful on this tour and moving forward.”Bermuda: Rodney Trott (capt), Jekon Edness, Jason Anderson, Treadwell Gibbons, Sammy Robinson, Janeiro Tucker, Dion Stovell, Dennico Hollis, Jacobi Robinson, Tre Manders, Kamau Leverock, Greg Maybury and Delray Rawlins.
