Bermuda still positive despite heavy defeat, says Manders

Bermuda’s senior national cricket team will look to get back to winning ways when they take on Barbados Defence Force in a 50 over match at Police Sports Club ground in Barbados today. The tourists suffered a bruising 10-wicket loss in their previous outing against a Young Men’s Progressive Club side bolstered by the inclusion of University of West Indies (UWI) and West Indies Under 19 players.Bermuda beat UWI by four-wickets in their opening tour match.Despite his team’s indifferent form to this point, interim national coach Arnold Manders is encouraged by the progress that’s been made in the Caribbean.“We have been very positive and there’s been a lot more positive than negative,” he said.Following Sunday’s heavy loss Manders held a team talk to try and pick his players up.“We discussed both games individually and what we need to do as a team to get better,” the former Western Stars and Bermuda skipper said. “We just told them there were little things they could’ve done to improve their performance. We have to learn how to adapt to situations and play ourselves out of them the best we can by being patient and smart.”Manders admits his players are at a disadvantage against their hosts who have superior match fitness. But he refuses to use that as an excuse for Bermuda’s capitulation against Young Men’s Progressive Club in the team’s previous outing.“They (hosts) are ending their season while we are just starting ours,” Manders said. “We are also playing with four guys (Tre Manders, Kamau Leverock, Greg Maybury and Delray Rawlins) coming out of England with limited training. They have not been outdoors and so they are hitting ball in a net.“We are also coming from 60 degree weather to here where it’s like 88 degrees and very humid. But you can’t make excuses and the players will just have to adapt.”Bermuda have travelled to Barbados with a 13-man squad missing the likes of skipper Stephen Outerbridge, former captain David Hemp, Lionel Cann and Malachi Jones.“Our whole middle order is sitting in Bermuda and England,” Manders said.Manders said the foursome’s absence will give others a chance to stake a claim in Bermuda’s team for upcoming ICC Americas Division One T20 and ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division Three commitments.“Guys are playing for the other spots available so either they improve or get left behind,” he added.Manders is expected to make changes to his line up for today’s match, with Dion Stovell likely to return after being omitted for Sunday’s match.Bermuda: Rodney Trott (capt), Jekon Edness, Jason Anderson, Treadwell Gibbons, Sammy Robinson, Janeiro Tucker, Dion Stovell, Dennico Hollis, Jacobi Robinson, Tre Manders, Kamau Leverock, Greg Maybury and Delray Rawlins.
