Bermuda slump to defeat in final tour game

Barbados BCA XI 127-9Bermuda 76-4Bermuda lost the final match of their Barbados tour yesterday, going down by 51 runs at the Police Recreation Ground in Weymouth to finish with a two-win, two-loss record.Set 128 for victory, Bermuda had the worst possible start when openers Treadwell Gibbons and Jason Anderson were both dismissed for nought in the first two overs. Further wickets fell on 18 (Kamau Leverock for 14) and 30 (Janeiro Tucker for nine) to leave Bermuda in deep trouble at 30-4.And while first cousins Tre Manders and Jekon Edness batted out the remaining 11.2 overs, Bermuda finished well short of their target as the BCA Select protected their modest total, allowing Bermuda to hit just six boundaries. Manders’ unbeaten 32 came off 45 balls and included one six while Edness scored 17.Number three bat Kamau Leverock hit three fours in his 14 off 15 balls while Janeiro Tucker hit two fours in his nine before he was just run out, a decisive dismissal for Bermuda.“If he had stayed we could have won the game,” said coach Arnold Manders.“We played on the same wicket for the fourth day so it was like a fourth day Test match wicket with a lot of bounce and turn.”The Barbados XI had a good start after winning the toss and opting to bat, putting on 30 for the first wicket as new ball pair Leverock and Greg Maybury went for 28 and 19 respectively in their three overs apiece, with Maybury getting the breakthrough. After that captain Rodney Trott turned for the slower bowlers to complete the 20 overs, with teenager Delray Rawlins, the seventh bowler used, claiming three for 12 from his two overs late in the innings while Trott supported with two for 22 off four. Tucker and Jacobi Robinson took a wicket each, Tucker one for five off two overs and Robinson one for 16 from three. The Bermuda team returns home today and will soon begin preparing for the upcoming trip to Florida.Bermuda’s batting will be noticeably stronger when the 14-man squad travels to Fort Lauderdale next month for the ICC World T/20 Qualifiers in Fort Lauderdale.Unavailability robbed the national squad of several recognised players for the training trip to Barbados, but new captain Stephen Outerbridge, David Hemp, Lionel Cann and Malachi Jones will return to the team for the March 18-25 tournament in Florida which sees the team competing in the T20 qualifiers before the team then plays four, 50 over matches against the United States as preparation for the ICC Division 3 Tournament to be played in Bermuda in April.“We had given a chance to those on the fringe but I don’t think too many of them accepted the challenge,” said interim national coach Manders prior to yesterday’s final match in Barbados. The trip to Barbados was organised to provide much needed match practice for the players who have not had any competitive matches since the season ended last September. “It’s disappointing as a coach when you are working on things and don’t see them come to fruition, particularly when you are getting into game situations,” said Manders.“But in hindsight they are out of season and we haven’t been out (doors) enough and it was something we discussed and we did the best we can. When we left Bermuda it was 60 degrees and came to Barbados where it is 88 and they’re staying out in the sun longer.“Altogether I think it has been a good process, the boys are away from family and away from home and easily accessible to the coaches.”Omitted from the current squad for the trip to Florida are opening batsman Treadwell Gibbons, Denniko Hollis, who will be the standby player, and Delrae Rawlins who is studying in England.
