Leverock dropped for T20 tournament in Florida
England based all rounder Kamau Leverock has been axed from Bermuda’s senior national cricket squad that will compete at this month’s ICC World T20 regional qualifiers in Florida, The Royal Gazette has learned.Last week Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) named the 18-year old cricketer in Bermuda’s 14-man squad that will compete at the ICC Americas Division One T20 Championships in Fort Lauderdale March 18-25.However, according to various reliable sources the left-arm batsman and right-arm seamer has since been dropped to perhaps pave the way for standby player Dennico Hollis to take his place instead for the upcoming tournament in Florida.BCB President and Selection Committee Chairman Lloyd Fray could not be reached for comment neither by phone or e-mail yesterday amid claims that Leverock had been omitted because his school grades back in the UK are “not up to par”.Last month saw the Somerset Cup Match player travel to Barbados with the senior national cricket squad to take part in a series of 50 over and T20 matches as preparation for the upcoming ICC World T20 regional qualifiers in Florida and ICC Pepsi World Cricket League (WCL) Division Three tournament to be staged here. He was one of four players that travelled from the UK to join up with the senior national squad in Barbados, the others being Greg Maybury, Tre Manders and Delray Rawlins.The nephew of former West Indies batsman Alvin Greenidge and Bermuda spinner Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock made his senior national debut against Argentina at ICC World T20 regional qualifiers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2011 before going on to play in the Surrey Championship League with Dorking Cricket Club in the UK later that same year. He also represented Bermuda at ICC World T20 global qualifiers in Dubai in 2012.Meanwhile as many as ten members from the senior national squad that travelled to Barbados last month have retained their places in the team for the upcoming ICC World 20 regional qualifiers which will see the top two teams progress to ICC World T20 global qualifiers in Dubai in November. Among those coming in to bolster the senior national squad are skipper Stephen Outerbridge, former skipper David Hemp, Lionel Cann and Malachi Jones.The squad is due to depart for Florida March 17, which will give squad members less than 24 hours to acclimatise to their new surroundings, and are due back March 30.At the completion of ICC World T20 regional qualifiers Bermuda will play a four-match 50 overs series against hosts USA as further preparation for this spring’s WCL Division Three tournament.Original Bermuda ICC World T20 regional qualifying squad: Stephen Outerbridge, Jason Anderson, Lionel Cann, Jekon Edness, Dion Stovell, David Hemp, Janeiro Tucker, Rodney Trott, Jacobi Robinson, Sammy Robinson, Greg Maybury, Kamau Leverock, Malachi Jones, Tre Manders.
