Teen Tre keen to build on promising performances

Promising starts: Tre Manders

Tre Manders is looking to continue his encouraging start to his senior national team career in the upcoming ICC World Cup T20 qualifying and ICC Pepsi World Cricket League (WCL) Division Three tournaments.Manders’ recent tour of Barbados was his first in the senior ranks having previously represented the Island at the Under-19 level. The Western Stars youngster impressed in the Caribbean, scoring 32 from 45 balls against a Barbados XI and is keen for another crack at the international level.“It felt great to actually be able to get some matches in while on tour,” said Manders. “Having been involved in the Under-19 programme for the last three years, I knew this opportunity was going to come pretty soon.“This chance has come fast but I’m ready for the big challenge and hope to help the team be successful.”The 18-year-old’s inclusion to the senior side carries on a rich tradition of the Manders name, with both he and cousin Jekon Edness coming from the cricketing family that has produced a list of outstanding players. The Manders brothers, Andre (Somerset), Arnold (St George’s) and Anthony (Somerset) all played in Cup Match in the late 1970s, 80s and early 1990s.Tre is the son of former Somerset skipper Andre, while Edness is the son of Anthony, both following their fathers in the Somerset team with the former making his debut in the triumphant 2012 side last year.Using the Under-19 experience as a stepping stone for the big stage, Manders hopes that the recently completed tour will hold him in good stead heading into the upcoming tournaments. The T20 qualifiers are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this month and will see the top two teams progressing to the second phase of qualifying to be held in Dubai later this year, while the WCL tournament will be staged in Bermuda in April.“For me personally, the Barbados tour gave me some experience of playing at a high level,” said Manders, who attends Itchin Sixth Form College in Southampton, UK.“The tour came in handy since I hadn't played a normal cricket match since my last Eastern County game for Bailey's Bay.“Yes this was my first real tour with the seniors, but I know it's not going to be anything like the tournament coming up.”
