Moore: Melbourne CC to provide timely match practice

Melbourne Cricket Club’s upcoming tour of Bermuda could not have been more timely for the senior national squad. The Jamaican team is scheduled to play three 50 over matches against the national team at Somerset Cricket Club next month. The incoming tour will afford national team players ideal match practice ahead of the ICC Pepsi World Cricket League Division 3 tournament to be held here following Melbourne CC’s brief visit.National coach David Moore, who has had his contract extended for another three-months, says the tour will benefit squad members in more ways than one.“The Melbourne Cricket Club tour has been perfectly timed to allow the players and coaching staff with the opportunity to work with the batting and bowling combinations that will be utilised during the WCL Division 3 tournament against a high quality opposition,” he said. “The opportunity to play at the Somerset Cricket Club ground, a ground that will be utilised during the tournament, also allows the team to get a feel for the pitch conditions at this time of the year.“I would like to thank Somerset for providing the Bermuda team with the opportunity to get some valuable match practice against a very good and well respected Melbourne CC from Jamaica.”Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) president and chairman of national team selectors Lloyd Fray added: “The BCB is very grateful for the work that Somerset CC has undertaken to bring the historic Melbourne CC to Bermuda to form an integral part of getting our squad ready.“The Board has invested greatly in a preparation programme for our national team which is second to none. The recent tour of Barbados provided much needed match practice.”The national team’s three-match series with the visiting Melbourne CC is being sponsored by tour hosts Somerset CC.Somerset CC president Alfred Maybury could not be reached to shed more light on next month’s tour.It is understood that Somerset’s ground is now off limits to football with preparations for Melbourne CC’s tour due to commence by the end of the week.Prior to Melbourne CC’s tour Bermuda will compete at the ICC Americas Division One T20 Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to be held March 18-25.Bermuda will be among the five countries that will compete for the two ICC World T20 global qualifying spots up for grabs during the regional event. The remaining participating countries include Cayman Islands, Suriname, Bahamas and hosts USA who will play Bermuda in three 50 over practice matches at the conclusion of the T20 tournament.A new Americas Division One T20 champion will be crowned as reigning champs Canada, who have been granted automatic qualification to November’s ICC World T20 global qualifying tournament in Dubai, are not back to defend their title due to conflicting Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League commitments with Kenya and United Arab Emirates.Bermuda finished third at the previous Americas Division One T20 Championship held in Florida in 2011 to advance to last year’s ICC World T20 global qualifiers in Dubai where David Moore’s men failed to qualify for the finals. The West Indies are the reigning ICC World T20 champions.
