Interim national cricket coach Arnold Manders has warned his players not to take anything for granted at the upcoming ICC Americas Division 1 T20 Championship in Florida.Bermuda will be among the five countries vying for the two available spots for November’s ICC World T20 global qualifiers that will be up for grabs in Fort Lauderdale.Speaking at yesterday’s press conference at Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) headquarters, Manders told reporters: “We are not underestimating any of the opposition because we all know that T20 provides an opportunity for the weaker teams to upset the stronger teams. I think all the teams in the T20 regional are looking to try and get in the top two.“I do not want Bermuda players to be underestimating any team so we are going to take one game at a time and play each game accordingly.”A new Americas T20 champion will be crowned this year as reigning champs Canada (who have already qualified for global World T20 qualifiers) won’t be back to defend their title due to conflicting international commitments.Bermuda’s squad has depth in its batting and in Jacobi Robinson an extra spinner. Malachi Jones, Greg Maybury and Janeiro Tucker will carry the bulk of seam bowling duties during the double round robin tournament to be held March 18-25.Manders reckons his team’s strength lies in its bowling“I’m very confident in this bowling attack,” he said. “I think right now that is our strength.”The former national team skipper believes Bermuda’s chances of progressing to November’s global World T20 qualifiers are just as good as any of their rivals.“This team is a good group,” he said. “It’s a got a bunch of experienced players with some of the best young players in the Island so I think if they play accordingly we should have a great chance of qualifying for the T20. If they perform to their ability we should qualify but the thing is being smart and making the right decisions and following the right processes.“We are quite confident going into the tournament. The boys are up for it and hopefully everything falls our way.”Among the new faces in Bermuda’s 14-man squad from the one that toured Barbados last month is skipper Stephen Outerbridge who has urged his batsmen to be more patient against opposing spinners on what he predicts will be flat tracks in Florida.“We just have to be confident playing against spinners and being a little more patient as the ball won’t come onto the bat like we would like,” he said. “We have guys who really go after the ball to get boundaries. We just have to play a bit smarter and try and get the job done and stick to the team plan.”Like Manders, Outerbridge isn’t taking anything for granted in Florida.“It’s sport so nothing is guaranteed,” he said. “At the end of the day if we don’t bat, bowl and field well then we are not going to be victorious so it’s really up to the players that are on the field. The coaching and the Board has done all they can so it’s basically down to the players to put in a honest show.”Bermuda will face Bahamas in their opening ICC Americas Division 1 T20 match at Brian Piccolo Park next Monday. All matches are to be held at Central Broward Regional Park and Brian Piccolo Park.Bermuda: Stephen Outerbridge (capt), Jason Anderson, Lionel Cann, Jekon Edness, Dion Stovell, David Hemp, Janeiro Tucker, Rodney Trott, Jacobi Robinson, Samuel Robinson, Greg Maybury, Dennico Hollis, Malachi Jones, Tre MandersSchedule:March 18 Bermuda v BahamasMarch 19 Bermuda v SurinameMarch 20 Bermuda v Cayman Islands (10am); Bermuda v USA (3pm)March 21 Bermuda Rest DayMarch 22 Bermuda v Cayman Islands (10am); Bermuda v USA (3pm)March 23 Bermuda v BahamasMarch 24 Bermuda v SurinameMarch 25 Rain day or additional 50 over matches (Bermuda will play USA in three 50 over matches)
