Bermuda target flying start

Much of Bermuda’s hopes of qualifying for November’s ICC World T20 global qualifiers will be riding on the big bat of senior player Janeiro Tucker in Florida over the next several days

Bermuda will be keen to get their ICC Americas Division 1 T20 campaign off to a winning start in Fort Lauderdale, Florida today. The Island’s senior national squad face Bahamas at Brian Piccolo Park with the first delivery of the match scheduled to be tossed down at 11am local time.Bahamas qualified for the tournament after winning last month’s ICC Americas Division 2 T20 Championship that they hosted. The eventual top two countries in Florida will advance to November’s ICC World T20 global qualifiers in Dubai.A new Americas Division 1 T20 champion will be crowned this year as reigning champs Canada (who have already qualified for ICC World T20 global qualifiers) are unable to defend their title due to conflicting Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League commitments with Kenya and United Arab Emirates.Bermuda’s T20 squad, that arrived in Florida yesterday, boasts 2007 ICC World Cup players Janeiro Tucker, Lionel Cann, David Hemp, Malachi Jones and Stephen Outerbridge as well as exciting youngsters such as Tre Manders and Greg Maybury. The squad has a deep batting order, several seam bowling options and five off spinners that could find the local conditions in Florida much to their liking.Seamer Dennico Hollis, a late replacement for Kamau Leverock, is the only left hand bowler in the squad.Bermuda also have two wicketkeepers in Jekon Edness and Jason Anderson.Unlike the previous Americas Division 1 T20 this year’s event will see participants play each other twice in a short period of time.Bermuda are scheduled to play their eight matches, including back-to-back fixtures with Cayman Islands and hosts USA on Wednesday and Friday, in the space of seven days. National squad players will get Thursday off to rest while Monday, March 25 has been set aside as a rain day.“This is a demanding competition and we will not be taking any teams in the tournament for granted,” said interim national coach Arnold Manders. “The World T20 has 16 participating countries so (it) provides an excellent chance for (ICC) Associate national to qualify to the world stage.“The squad is well prepared and has an exciting mix of experienced seasoned players and many young players that have recently graduated from the BCB’s globally acclaimed development programs.”Manders is confident Bermuda can achieve its global ICC World T20 qualifying objective in Florida.“I am confident that if the squad applies itself fully to the task at hand we will achieve good results,” he said. “If they (players) perform to their ability I think we should qualify but the thing is being smart and making the right decisions and following the right processes.”Bermuda skipper Stephen Outerbridge added: “We just have to play a bit smarter and try and get the job done and stick to the team plan.“This is a robust tournament with very competitive ambitious teams. The intense tournament will test our team but I am confident that we will be able to perform to our best ability.“The team recognises the importance of finishing in the top two in this tournament to be able to compete in the World T20 qualifier in November. At the end of the day if we don’t bat, bowl and field well then we are not going to be victorious so it’s really up to the players that are on the field.”All matches are to be held at Central Broward Regional Park and Brian Piccolo Park.Bermuda: Stephen Outerbridge (capt), Jason Anderson, Lionel Cann, Jekon Edness, Dion Stovell, David Hemp, Janeiro Tucker, Rodney Trott, Jacobi Robinson, Samuel Robinson, Greg Maybury, Dennico Hollis, Malachi Jones, Tre Manders.
