Hemp ton inspires Bermuda to victory

David Hemp scored 103 against USA yesterday.

USA 284 for 6; Bermuda 285 for 8Bermuda recorded their first win against Americas rivals United States in five years at Central Broward Regional Park in Florida yesterday. The senior national squad defeated their hosts by two wickets in a 50 overs contest that went right down to the wire.Bermuda required just one run for victory from the final over but lost two wickets in the space of three deliveries as USA applied some late pressure in the field in the hopes of pulling off an unlikely win.Rodney Trott (seven) was bowled off an inside edge off the first ball of the over and was joined in the pavilion two balls later by wicketkeeper Jekon Edness (0) who was run out.But Jacobi Robinson (17 not out) and Sammy Robinson (0 not out) crossed for the winning run on the fourth ball of the over after the former’s outside edge beat the fielder at third man.Earlier, top order bat David Hemp laid the foundation for Bermuda’s inspiring win with an aggressive knock of 103 from 114 deliveries that included 12 boundaries. It was the only century achieved by a Bermuda batsman on tour.Hemp added 59 runs for the second wicket with Tre Manders (26), 70 for the third with Janeiro Tucker (25) and 39 for the fourth wicket with Lionel Cann (35) before he was eventually caught out on the last ball of the 39th over. However, USA’s joy at the sight of Hemp strolling back to the pavilion was short-lived as Cann and Malachi Jones (29) added a brisk 54 runs for the fifth wicket to place Bermuda within sight of victory.Seamer Adil Bhatti was the pick of a sloppy USA attack that tossed down 13 wides and three no balls in a total of 30 extras.Earlier, middle order Barrington Bartley (111 not out) and Japen Patel (40) put Bermuda’s bowlers to the sword as USA plundered 189 runs from the final 20 overs of their innings after electing to take first strike.USA were 95 for four after 30 overs before Bartley (nine sixes and eight boundaries) and Patel (three sixes and two boundaries) put on a fireworks display during a 95 run sixth wicket partnership achieved in just 9.3 overs. Bartley also shared in an unbroken 56 run seventh wicket stand in four overs with Bhatti (18 not out) after Tucker claimed the wicket of Patel in his second spell with the last ball of the 46th over and 38 for the fifth with Aditaya Thyagarajan (47).Jones returned Bermuda’s best bowling figures of two for 49 off ten overs while Tucker had two for 60 off ten overs that included three maidens.Spinners Delray Rawlins (one for 56) and Jacobi Robinson (one for 37) claimed one wicket each as USA’s innings ended at 284 for six.Bermuda only gave up six runs in extras that included five wides.Yesterday’s uplifting result would’ve done Bermuda’s confidence the world of good ahead of next month’s crucial ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 Championship on local soil.“This has obviously given us a big boost because we know we can compete at this level,” said interim national coach Arnold Manders. “We’ve always been in a position to win but we’ve never been able to close but we did that today. We beat one of the strongest teams in the region so that’s a positive because we haven’t beaten them in five years.“We controlled the match for three quarters in the field but they ended up scoring nearly 200 runs in the last 20 overs. But the guys batted well, especially Hemp, Lionel, Janeiro, Malachi and Tre.”USA won the other two 50 overs matches with Bermuda by comfortable margins.Bermuda’s cricketers are due back today.
