Under-19 cricketers crushed

Bermuda 55 all outUSA 59-2Bermuda’s Under-19 World Cup qualifying bid suffered a major setback in Toronto, Canada today.A poor batting display condemned Bermuda to a heavy eight-wicket defeat against USA at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City.Bermuda could only muster 55 runs, which included 12 wides, during their innings.Bermuda were 14 without loss after six overs before losing all of their wickets for the addition of 41 runs with only middle order batsman and vice -captain Kamau Leverock (11) managing double figures.Tailenders Kwasi James (5 not out) and Delray Rawlins (1) produced Bermuda’s highest partnership, adding 16 runs for the ninth wicket before the curtains came down on the innings.Led by three-wicket hauls from A Buch (3-22) and R Varadarajan (3-11), USA dismissed Bermuda’s brittle batting order in 31.4 overs. In reply, USA raced to their target in 9.4 overs with skipper Steven Taylor leading the charge with an unbeaten 32 from 33 balls that included three fours.Leverock (1-19) made the breakthrough with the new ball when he shattered A Ahmad’s (4) stumps with the final delivery of the first over of the innings. But a 45-run second wicket stand between W Shaw (13) and Taylor steadied the ship and carried USA to the brink of victory.Taylor and T Ross (4 not out) knocked off the winning runs via an unbroken ten-run third wicket stand, with the latter batsman hammering the final nail in Bermuda’s coffin after dispatching spinner Joshua Gilbert (1-20), the Bermuda captain, to the mid wicket fence to end the match in a flurry.Bermuda will play hosts Canada in their final round robin match at the same venue.A Bermuda victory will leave all of the participating teams level on points and force the tournament to be decided on net run rate. The eventual winners will qualify for next year’s Under-19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Bermuda last appeared at the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008.
