Tucker and Wade to be honoured at Cup Match awards

Former opposing Cup Match captains John Tucker and Clevie Wade are among those to be recognised during this year’s Annual Emancipation Cup Match Awards Luncheon.

Incidentally, ex-St George’s skipper Wade is being recognised on the 30th anniversary of his famous Cup Match triumph over Tucker’s Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club in 1983.

The event, hosted by Heritage Productions, will be held July 21 at Somerset Cricket Club (1pm).

The luncheon is an occasion when former Cup Match players are awarded for their involvement and contribution to the annual midsummer classic.

Heritage Productions organised the inaugural Emancipation Awards Luncheon ceremony to commemorate Bermuda’s Emancipation while simultaneously honouring those men who have helped to promote Bermuda’s cultural heritage.

Each year players from both Somerset Cricket Club and St Georges Cricket Club are recognised.

This year will see the spotlight shine on former Somerset foursome Clyde (Tango) Burgess, Bergon Spencer, St Clair (Brinky) Tucker and John Tucker.

Those from St George’s being recognised are Allan Douglas, Allan Richardson, Arnold Manders and Wade.

A special award will be presented to former cricket broadcaster Winston JR Jones.

Special guests include Junior Minister of Community and Cultural Development, Senator Alexis Swan JP, Somerset Cricket Club President Alfred Maybury and St George’s Cricket Club President Neil Paynter.

Past awardees of the Annual Emancipation Cup Match Awards Luncheon include cricket legends Dennis Wainwright, Calvin (Bummy) Symonds, Clarence Parfit and the late Sheridan Raynor.
