Pressure on Bascome as East Enders attempt to regain trophy

The pressure is on returning St. George’s captain Oronde Bascome to win the Cup Match trophy back at the first attempt.Bascome led St. George’s to victory in 2011, but the East Enders were already the cup holders. He missed last year’s defeat in Somerset because of illness but has been tasked this year with reclaiming the cup on home turf for the first time since 1997 when, ironically, his father Herbie and another colt Gary Brangman were the bowling heros in an eight-wicket victory.St. George’s boldly named four colts that year (Bascome, Brangman, Jason Lewis and Mark Ray) and then produced a result on a wicket which played to their advantage. New ball pair Bascome and Brangman shared nine wickets in the first innings and five in the second before Arnold Manders weighed in with five for 30 from 12 overs as Somerset were routed for 138.Glenn Blakeney was a hero that day, too, scoring 79 and 90 not out as St. George’s boldly declared their first innings 16 runs behind the Somerset total at 11.58 on the second morning. By 3.51, Somerset were dismissed for an overall lead of 154, a target St. George’s reached with half of the last 20 overs remaining and with only two wickets down.St. George’s were criticised in some quarters for the wicket that produced an uneven bounce which Bascome and Brangman exploited.“Going into the second day we were just going to decide if Dean Minors, Lionel Cann and myself could ‘get off’ and if we could we were going to try to get a big lead,” explained St. George’s captain Clay Smith after winning back the cup he lost the year before.“But when we didn’t we decided to declared behind and the game was won in the second innings between Gary, Herbie and Arnold who bowled exceptionally well for us.”Groundsman Mansfield Smith vowed to produce a result wicket that year and predicted that it would turn a great deal on the second day. Manders was able to produce his best bowling figures in Cup Match.Blakeney, who scored a match-high 68 last year, has not played any cricket this year and is a certain change for the challengers, leaving Lionel Cann, possibly, as the only surviving player from the ‘97 Cup Match. Another change for St. George’s from last year’s team is England-based Stefan Kelly who is unavailable. And while St. George’s must choose a bowling attack capable of dismissing Somerset twice, the champions have the luxury of being somewhat conservative. Only six times in the last 30 years has the cup changed hands, with Clevie Wade winning back the cup in 1983 that Gregory Foggo, Oronde Bascome’s grandfather, lost in 1979.Somerset had to wait 13 years before winning it back in 1996, only to lose it the following year before reclaiming it in 2000.St. George’s then won it back in 2005 and had victories in ‘06 and 2011 before Somerset turned the tables last year.If another win is achieved this year it would mark the first time in 30 years that the Classic has had three victories in a row.
