Bermuda quartet help ICC to victory

The ICC Americas team, featuring four Bermudians — Kamau Leverock, Delray Rawlins, Christian Burgess and Tre Manders — picked up their first win in the Regional Under-19 One Day Tournament in St Kitts on Sunday when they beat Leeward Island by three wickets. The team, made up of players from Canada, the US and Bermuda and captained by Stephen Taylor, lost their opening match to Guyana by seven wickets on Saturday. The following day the Americas hit back to record a hard-fought win as Canadian pace bowlers Stephan Rajasingam and Abrash Khan took three wickets apiece.Rajasingam picked up three wickets in his opening burst as Leewards were reduced to 23-4 with Khan picking up the other wicket before returning at the end of the innings to collect two more wickets.Early rain reduced the match to a 27 over contest and Leewards never really got into top gear after the loss of their early batsmen. The Americas were energetic in the field and they worked hard to restrict the Leewards to 113 for 7.The Americas reply got off to a flying start with Sudeepta Aurka and Shakeel Ahmad both hitting superb boundaries in the opening two overs, Ahmad hit the shot of the day with a huge six over cover off the opening bowler. At 88 for 2 Americas looked to be cruising to victory but when captain Taylor fell to a poor shot, caught at deep midwicket, the jitters set in but in the end they got over the line with three wickets to spare. Taylor was the top batsman with 34 but it was the bowling earlier in the day that key to the Americas victory.Americas had a bye yesterday before facing Windwards in their third game today. The ICC Americas team caught their first glimpse of the next generation of Caribbean cricketers on Sunday when Guyana also handed them a wake-up call with a comfortable victory.Taylor won the toss and chose to bat on what turned out to be a wicket of uneven bounce as he and Stephan Joseph made a steady start. They had 36 on the board when Taylor edged a ball to the keeper. That wicket saw the introduction of spin and the upper and middle order seemed devoid of ideas of how to score. The spinners bowled a good line and length and the batting side’s inability to sweep or use their feet saw them anchored in the crease before going for the big hit and getting out. Three spinners logged group figures of 20 overs 7 wickets for 25 runs. Only a gutsy 15 from 53 balls from Kapoor and two big sixes from Manoosingh got the score up to near 100, the innings finishing on 91 all out.The Guyana batsmen then punished the Americas bowling as Leverock, taking the first over, went for 24 runs.Taylor and Manoosingh bowled with control and turn and picked up a wicket each, one courtesy of an excellent stumping by wicketkeeper Christian Burgess. The only other bright spot was a wicket for the 15 year old Abrash Khan who linked up again with Burgess for his wicket.Guyana ended the game three wickets down with half the overs to spare.
