Bay recall Furbert for Eastern Counties

Bailey’s Bay skipper Stephen Outerbridge scored a century in the previous Eastern Counties round against Cleveland.

Champions Bailey’s Bay have made one change to their squad that will bid to defend their title against St David’s in the second round of the Eastern Counties at Lords tomorrow.Teenage all-rounder Azendea Furbert has been recalled to fill the void created by the unavailability of star batsman Tre Manders.Manders, who struck a maiden century in this year’s Cup Match at Wellington Oval, is currently representing a ICC Americas Select at the West Indies Under-19 Regional One Day tournament in St Kitts.Furbert comes into the squad fresh off a solid knock in Bay’s successful Junior Eastern Counties title defence against Cleveland last weekend, scoring a half century (59) in the low scoring match at Sea Breeze Oval. The 15-year old Berkeley Institute student will likely feature in the champions’ middle order and if need be can assist in the spin bowling department with his off breaks.Furbert, who is captain of Bay’s youth team, is also a capable wicketkeeper.Bay beat Cleveland County by 49 runs in the first round of the Eastern Counties last month at Lords to tighten their grip on the coveted cup. Skipper Stephen Outerbridge struck a timely century (116) while seamer Lateef Trott seized four for 51 to lead Bay to victory.Eastern Counties cup holders Bay have been a shadow of the team that dominated domestic cricket last season. But Islanders coach Wendell Smith isn’t taking the champions for granted as counties cricket always seems to bring the best out of them.“It’s the Eastern Counties and a match of mammoth significance to them and us,” he said“It’s expected that St David’s’ team will comprise mostly of league players with former club players Lionel Cann and Chris Douglas among the outsiders that could be drafted into the squad for the big occasion. The Islanders were due to announce their final squad last night. This year’s Eastern Counties hosts will enter the match with a psychological advantage having beaten rivals Bay by six runs in the league at Lords last month in a match that went right down to the wire.Bailey’s Bay: Stephen Outerbridge (capt), Rodney Trott, Terryn Fray, Azendea Furbert, Sinclair Smith, Cal Dill, Christino Smith, Ryan Steede, Lateef Trott, Burton Outerbridge, Kyle Hodsoll,
