Stovell tops in MVP standings

Southampton Rangers might have to settle for second place behind St David’s in the Logic Premier Division standings but one of their players looks very likely to win the Most Valuable Player award.Rangers are led in the MVP tables by captain Dion Stovell who is ahead of Malachi Jones of Willow Cuts by 58 points — 928 to 870 — with one game remaining.And while it will be a two-man race for the top spot, Rangers also occupy the third and fourth places where Derrick Brangman has 750 points and Janeiro Tucker 725.Macai Simmons of St George’s (619), Allan Douglas of Cleveland (609) and St George’s captain Oronde Bascome (606) are fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.Both Stovell and Jones, a former Rangers player, have had outstanding seasons with the bat and ball.The MVP calculating system takes into consideration players’ performances as batsmen, bowlers and fielders, with one point awarded for each run scored and 25 bonus points given for a century. Stovell is the leading runscorer with 538 in the league, including six 50s. His best knock in the league is 90.Jones, who has scored 335 runs, has one century and two 50s for 360 batting points.Oronde Bascome of St. George’s is the second highest run-getter in the league with 421, including a century and three 50s, while Lionel Cann of Warwick has the third highest total, 418.In bowling, 20 points are awarded for unassisted wickets (bowled or lbw) and 10 for assisted wickets, while 50 points are earned for a hat-trick. In fielding, 10 points are awarded for catches and stumpings.Stovell has also had a good season with the ball, taking 22 wickets, seven behind clubmate Brangman who leads with 29 wickets while Jones has 28.Stovell has 340 bowling points while Jones’ six-wicket haul last weekend took him to 28 for the season and to 500 bowling points, the most earned by a bowler.
