Outerbridge ‘hurt and discouraged’
Stephen Outerbridge was informed he is no longer captain of Bermuda’s World Twenty20 Qualifying squad via a text message, sources have claimed. And this has reportedly “hurt and discouraged” the early order batsman who has taken a sabbatical from senior national squad training. It is understood that veteran all-rounder Janeiro Tucker has been appointed as Bermuda’s captain for November’s World Twenty20 Qualifiers in Dubai. But so far Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) have been reluctant to comment on the issue surrounding the captaincy.E-mails sent to chief executive Neil Speight went unanswered yesterday.Privately the BCB have come under fire for they manner in which they are alleged to have broken the news to Outerbridge.“You can’t treat people like that,” said one source who spoke to The Royal Gazette under condition of anonymity. “That was very unprofessional and hurting and how can you treat someone like that?“Stephen is upset over the way they (BCB) went about letting him know he is no longer captain of the Bermuda T20 team. He was just informed that he is longer captain through a text and he’s hurt and discouraged.“He’s a man so why couldn’t they (BCB) be man enough to come and sit down one on one with him. You just can’t treat people like that.”The source dismissed speculation that Outerbridge quit the senior national programme because he was replaced by Tucker as captain for the upcoming tour of Dubai where Bermuda will bid for one of six World Twenty20 qualifying spots available.“Everyone thinks Stephen is not coming training because of the captaincy but that’s not true,” the source added. “He has no grudge against Janeiro being captain — it’s all about how they (BCB) treated him and took the captaincy away from him.“He asked for a break due to other priorities but hasn’t trained in just over two weeks.”The BCB announced a training squad of 36 players last month which will eventually be trimmed down to 15 for the Qualifiers.Bermuda have been pitted in Group B which also includes Scotland, Denmark, Holland, Afghanistan, Kenya, Nepal and Papua New Guinea.Group A consists of Ireland, Canada, UAE, Namibia, Hong Kong, Uganda, USA and Italy,The senior squad will play warm-up matches against Italy and Canada before taking on Scotland in their opening World Twenty20 qualifying match on November 15.
